YI2 level SMW

Mario riding Yoshi in Super Mario World

The first time Yoshi is freed, he hatches from an egg and thanks Mario or Luigi for freeing him, claiming to have been trapped within the egg.

Yoshi can use his long tongue to eat almost any type of enemy, including foes Mario and Luigi could not otherwise defeat. He can also eat power-ups. If an enemy hits Yoshi, he runs away, meaning Mario or Luigi must chase him down and jump on him in order to calm him down and keep riding. Yoshi cannot enter Ghost Houses (except the Sunken Ghost Ship), fortresses, the Koopalings' castles, or Bowser's Castle. Mario or Luigi enters these levels solo, and Yoshi waits outside for either of them to return. While Mario or Luigi is riding Yoshi, percussion is added to the game's music, a detail applicable to most games where Yoshi is rideable.

When Yoshi eats different types of Koopa Shells, he gains different abilities depending on which color shell he ate. When Yoshi eats a Green Shell, he can spit it out as a projectile. When he eats a Red Shell, he can spit out three fireballs. When Yoshi eats a Yellow Shell, he can stomp on the ground, causing miniature earthquakes. Finally, when Yoshi eats a Blue Shell, he can fly for a limited amount of time.

Yoshi can also acquire wings from an item block. These wings turn Yoshi blue (except in Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, where Yoshi retains his color upon acquiring the wings), allowing him to fly. In the Star World, Mario can feed Baby Yoshis of different colors various items and enemies, eventually turning a Baby Yoshi into a full-grown Yoshi. These colored Yoshis each have a specific ability that they can use whenever they hold a shell in their mouths, regardless of the color of said shell.

Super Mario 64[]

SM64 Yoshi on rooftop

Mario looking at Yoshi on the roof of Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64

Yoshi makes an appearance on the rooftop of Princess Peach's Castle once Mario has collected all 120 Power Stars. By speaking to Yoshi, Mario is given 100 lives and an improved Triple Jump. Following this, Yoshi jumps off the castle roof, into the waterfall, and does not appear again within that save file. Yoshi can be seen on the roof during the end credits if Mario has collected all 120 Power Stars but has not yet talked to Yoshi.

In one of Yoshi's quotes, while he is speaking to Mario, there is a typo that reads, "Mario!!! It that really you???" when "it" should be substituted for "is."

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe[]

A graphic of Yoshi with three Yoshi Eggs, unlocked by finding every Yoshi Egg in Challenge Mode

In Challenge mode, there is a hidden Yoshi Egg, and if Mario or Luigi finds it and completes the level, during the results screen, Yoshi hatches from the egg. Aside from this, Yoshi is also featured in various album images, including Yoshi Award, two images which can be printed using the Game Boy Printer, and a colored picture of Yoshi with three Yoshi Eggs that is unlocked by collecting every Yoshi Egg in Challenge Mode.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

Yoshi Mario Hat SM64DS artwork

Artwork of Yoshi Holding Mario's Hat for Super Mario 64 DS

Yoshi is now a playable character, let alone now one of the main protagonists, alongside Mario. He is the only character available from the very start of the adventure. This is the first Super Mario series game where Yoshi is played Mario or another character riding on him.

Yoshi Castle Grounds SM64DS

Yoshi in the Castle Grounds at the start of Super Mario 64 DS

In the opening cutscene, Yoshi is sleeping on the roof of Princess Peach's Castle. Some time after Mario, Luigi, and Wario run into the castle, Yoshi wakes up on the ground, specifically the starting point of the Castle Grounds, where the Lakitu had apparently carried him down to inform him that Mario, Luigi and Wario have not yet returned from the castle. Because the doors to the castle are locked, Yoshi has to catch a rabbit with a key to unlock it. Yoshi can rescue Mario by collecting at least eight Power Stars to access Goomboss Battle and defeat Goomboss for the Mario Key. Luigi and Wario can be unlocked later on, although it is not possible for Yoshi to do so because each character has their own set of abilities, and Yoshi's does not allow for accessing said areas with the Luigi Key and Wario Key.

Like in earlier appearances, Yoshi can use his long tongue to eat certain enemies and items, such as coins and even Power Stars. If an enemy is in Yoshi's mouth for several seconds, it converts into an egg, which trails behind Yoshi. Only one egg can follow Yoshi at a time, but he can throw it as a projectile. If Yoshi has not yet swallowed an enemy, he can spit it out to defeat it.

Yoshi can wear either a Mario's Cap, a Luigi's Cap, or a Wario's Cap to transform into the corresponding character. In certain cases, a Goomba can be found wearing a cap, and if Yoshi swallows it, he automatically puts on the cap. In certain circumstances, Yoshi is required to do this, such as if he is selected for the Bob-omb Battlefield mission Footrace with Koopa the Quick, as Koopa the Quick only wants to race against Mario, so Yoshi has to wear Mario's Cap. If Yoshi takes damage or exits a location, the loses the cap and therefore the disguise it provides. On a course's mission select menu, the player can use their Stylus to tap an icon of a cap corresponding to a character, provided they had already been unlocked, so that right when Yoshi begins the selected mission, he puts on the cap.

Yoshi is the weakest of the four playable characters, therefore limiting his abilities: he cannot perform a Slide Attack; use a strong enough Ground Pound to either defeat a Boo or break a Brick; grab enemies and objects; or even punch and kick. However, Yoshi can only punch and destroy Bricks if he is under the effects of a mushroom. Because Yoshi cannot defeat Boos, including those found in the Castle Courtyard, Big Boo's Haunt is the only course inaccessible to him.

Yoshi has average running and swimming speed, and he and Luigi are tied for having the highest jump out of the four playable characters. Aside from producing eggs and throwing them, Yoshi retained another ability from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the flutter kick, in which Yoshi kicks his legs in the air to gain a slight boost in height, similarly to Luigi's scuttle. However, Yoshi cannot Triple Jump and Long Jump as high and far as Mario and Luigi do, nor can he perform a flutter kick while doing a Triple Jump.

Yoshi's Power Flower ability is Fire Power, which allows him to breathe fire capable of melting Ice Blocks and defeating most enemies on contact. Yoshi can eat a source of fire and breathe a single breath of fire by spitting it out. Yoshi can also breathe fire if he has a Kuromame or a Fly Guy in his mouth.

In the ending, after Princess Peach has been rescued, Yoshi and the other playable characters are properly invited into the castle to have cake with her.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

While Yoshi does not appear in the main adventure, he appears in some of the minigames, some of which return from Super Mario 64 DS while others are unique to New Super Mario Bros.. The latter game introduces a minigame titled Balloon Racing, in which Yoshi has to make it to the top of Peach's Castle within the time limit.

Super Mario Galaxy[]

SuperYoshiGalaxy

The Yoshi-shaped planet in Space Junk Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy

While Yoshi does not physically appear, he is referenced a few times. When creating a save file, Yoshi's head is one of the heads that the player can use to represent their save file. In Space Junk Galaxy, there is a wooden planet carved into the shape of Yoshi's head, and the mission in which Mario retrieves the Power Star on this planet is even titled Yoshi's Unexpected Appearance.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

NSMBW Mario and Yoshi Jumping Artwork

New Super Mario Bros. Wii artwork of Mario riding Yoshi

Yoshi retains his role of being a rideable character from Super Mario World, and this is Yoshi's second playable appearance in a 2D Super Mario game. Percussion is once again added to the music while the player's character rides Yoshi. In multiplayer, there is also Yellow, Light-Blue, and Pink Yoshi, all of whom act the same as the main Yoshi.

Aside from his usual abilities from Super Mario World, Yoshi also has the added ability to Flutter Jump. He can also eat a fireball spit by a Venus Fire Trap and then spit the fireball back out. In addition, Yoshi can also swallow and spit out an Ice Ball thrown by an Ice Bro, a Hammer thrown by a Hammer Bro, and keep a Light Block in his mouth. Whenever the player's character and Yoshi enter a sub-area of a level, Yoshi loses whatever he had in his mouth. In multiplayer, Yoshi can also spit out a fireball thrown by another playable character while in their Fire form or even another playable character themselves. Unlike in Super Mario World, the differently colored Koopa Shells do not yield any unique abilities.

Like in Super Mario World, Yoshi can eat Berries, which specifically appear in the same levels as him. A difference is that if Yoshi eats a Pokey while it is covered in leaves, this also counts as eating a fruit.

Yoshi appears in a few levels, including World 1-3, World 2-5, World 3-2, World 4-5, World 6-4, and lastly World 7-6. In Coin Battle, Yoshi also appears in World CoinNSMBW Coinworld-5. Unlike before, Yoshi cannot continue over into other levels with the characters, so if the player's character slides down the Flagpole with Yoshi, they then jump off of Yoshi, who waves goodbye to the character as they continue on to leave the level.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

MarioYoshiLuma SuperMarioGalaxy2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 artwork of Mario riding Yoshi

Yoshi appears in certain galaxies, where he can assist Mario and Luigi as they ride him in the level. At first, Yoshi is always found inside of a Yoshi Egg placed on a small nest, and Mario or Luigi can free Yoshi from it by jumping onto the Yoshi Egg, cracking it open. While riding Yoshi, a drum beat is added to the music, similarly to Super Mario World.

SMG2 Yoshi

Super Mario Galaxy 2 screenshot of Yoshi, after he hatches from his egg for the first time in Yoshi Star Galaxy

Yoshi first appears in Yoshi Star Galaxy, specifically its first mission Saddle Up with Yoshi. Here, there is a Luma who informs Mario that a Magikoopa appeared out of nowhere, trapped Yoshi inside of an egg, and encased it in a magical force field. After Mario defeats the Magikoopa, the force field disappears, allowing Mario to jump onto the Yoshi Egg. After being freed, Yoshi thanks Mario for rescuing him and offers to help Mario for the rest of his journey. After Mario has completed the mission, Yoshi also be found on Starship Mario, where his egg is on Mario's nose on the ship.

Yoshi can perform Flutter Jumps and Side Somersaults, but he is incapable of doing Triple Jumps or Spin Jumps, unlike in Super Mario Sunshine, where the only one of the four moves that Yoshi cannot perform is Side Somersaults. Yoshi is faster than both Mario and Luigi. Yoshi can eat certain objects if the player's character targets them with the Wii Remote and presses B Button, which replaces the ability to shoot Star Bits while riding Yoshi. Mario or Luigi can stop riding Yoshi if the player holds Nunchuk Z Button and presses A Button. Yoshi can swim, although he cannot dive. Unlike in previous 3D Super Mario games, Yoshi cannot perform Ground Pounds, possibly because the command for when Mario or Luigi performs it while not on Yoshi is instead used for jumping off of Yoshi. Whenever Yoshi obtains a Power Star with Mario or Luigi, Yoshi does his own victory pose and sound effect.

Similarly to Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi can eat various fruits to change his color, but the main difference is that instead of just changing to a different color variety, Yoshi also changes into a different power-up form. Yoshi has three powered-up forms: the red Dash Yoshi, who can run at high speeds over water and up walls when he eats a Dash Pepper; the light-blue Blimp Yoshi, who inflates like a balloon and floats towards otherwise unreachable areas when a Blimp Fruit is ingested; and the yellow Bulb Yoshi, who can illuminate hidden objects by eating a Bulb Berry.

Like in previous 2D Super Mario games, if Mario takes damage while on Yoshi, Yoshi runs off, but a difference is that if Yoshi is not mounted for a while, he retreats into his egg and returns to where he was initially found. Any electrical attacks, electric rails, lava, and certain fiery attacks instantly causes Yoshi to return into his egg. In Bowser's Galaxy Generator, if Yoshi is dismounted right before the fight with Bowser, he waves goodbye to Mario or Luigi.

Like with Super Mario Galaxy, Yoshi's head can be selected as one of the planets to represent the player's save file.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Unlike in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, all regular Yoshis are green, so the game does not have any explicitly defined Yoshi character.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[]

Yoshi is only featured in the Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U styles, acting the same as in the respective games. Knocking on a Warp Door in the Super Mario World style may cause Weird Mario to appear while riding Yoshi.

Exclusively in the original Super Mario Maker, Yoshi appears as an unlockable Mystery Mushroom costume, which can be unlocked either at random upon completing the 100-Mario Challenge or by scanning a compatible Yoshi amiibo. The standard Yoshi costume replaces the usual sound effects with those from Super Mario World. There is also a Yarn Yoshi costume, which can be unlocked through the same means, but it instead uses sound effects from Yoshi's Woolly World.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

SMO Yoshi Capture

SMO Snapshot Yoshi

Yoshi atop Peach's Castle in Super Mario Odyssey

Yoshi is first found on the roof of Peach's Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom, a homage to Yoshi's appearance in the original Super Mario 64. Mario can capture Yoshi by throwing Cappy at him, giving the player control of Yoshi. Once captured, Yoshi can use his trademark Flutter Jump and eating abilities, playing the most similarly to his appearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but unlike the game, Yoshi can now only stick out his tongue directly in front, just like in the 2D Super Mario installments. Yoshi can side-somersault and double-jump, but he cannot perform a Triple Jump.

The game introduces a few additional abilities for Yoshi. If the player continuously shakes the controller, Yoshi can stick his tongue to the ground and run in circles around where his tongue is stuck. Yoshi can now even latch on to walls with his tongue, and similarly to wall-jumping, Yoshi can still extend his tongue or jump off while stuck to a wall, potentially allowing him to latch on to another wall.

Aside from the Mushroom Kingdom, Yoshi later appears in the Dark Side, where while he is captured, Yoshi must eat berries for a Power Moon to appear. Yoshi also appears in one of the Darker Side's sections.

Super Mario Maker 2[]

Yoshi acts the same as in Super Mario Maker. There is also a Ninji Speedruns course named Yoshi's Piranha Plant Picnic, which features Yoshi, who must swallow 25 Piranha Plants.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]

Yoshi, along with Red Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, and Light Blue Yoshi, appear as standalone playable characters. Yoshi and the other Yoshis all retain the ability to flutter jump, and just as before, they can also swallow enemies. Both Yoshi and the other Yoshis are all unaffected by enemy attacks, but they still lose a life from falling into a pit.

In multiplayer, other players can jump onto Yoshi to ride him, even if it is a Yoshi.

Mario Discovery series[]

Mario is Missing![]

Yoshi accompanied Mario and Luigi on their trip to Antarctica to try and stop Bowser from melting the ice caps and flooding Earth. Mario ends up being captured, leaving Luigi to be the star of the journey, with assistance from Yoshi. After using the Globulator and determining his location, Luigi can summon Yoshi for a ride. Yoshi has the ability to defeat enemies that Luigi cannot, such as the Pokey inside the exit pipe. With assistance from Yoshi, Luigi manages to rescue Mario and defeat Bowser.

Mario's Time Machine[]

Yoshi has a role in both the PC and Nintendo Entertainment System versions, although he does not appear in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version.

In the PC version, Yoshi helps Mario get out of the Cretaceous Period if the player inputs the incorrect year and setting in the Timulator, whereas the Super Nintendo version just takes Mario back to the present.

In the Nintendo Entertainment System version, Yoshi plays a larger role. Here, while Yoshi scouts Bowser's Museum, he gets captured by Bowser, who imprisons Yoshi inside of a cage. Mario has to return the historical items stolen across time and space to reach Bowser, then defeat him to obtain the key needed to free Yoshi from his cage.

The alternately colored Yoshis all handle the same as the original Yoshi, although may have a different kart color scheme.

In Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass, Yoshi was given another personal course, Yoshi's Island, giving Yoshi a total of three personal race courses in the game.

Yoshi returns as a playable character, being of the speed type. He has three courses of his own: the Baby Mario & Yoshi Court, the Birdo & Yoshi Court, and the Yoshi Court. This is the first game in which Yoshi and Birdo are paired together.

In the intro, Yoshi participates in the tournament, where he wins against Princess Daisy to advance to the semifinals, only to lose to Mario during said match.

Yoshi is now a playable character from the start. His Offensive Power Shot is Rainbow Flutter while his Defensive Power Shot is Rolling Egg Return. Koopa Troopa is Yoshi's default partner in Doubles matches.

Yoshi's trophy animation starts with him entering the stage, where Luigi is about to present Yoshi's trophy to him. Yoshi then begins to feel hungry, and his stomach growls. Mistaking the trophy for a pineapple, Yoshi lashes out with his tongue to eat the trophy, accidentally swallowing Luigi in the process. Yoshi then wonders about Luigi's sudden disappearance.

If Yoshi crosses the finish line first, he wins. As such, the other Yoshis declare Yoshi their new boss, an offer declined by Yoshi, who says that he only wants to race.

To thank Mario for his help, Yoshi gives him a few Yoshi Cookies. Yoshi can be summoned if Mario uses a cookie in battle, where he then attempts to eat an enemy to convert it into an item that Mario can use. If unsuccessful, Yoshi gives Mario a Yoshi Candy, capable of restoring up to 100 HP.

At this point, Mario can hit "It" with the Paint Hammer, revealing Yoshi. If Yoshi has not been revealed after the Dark Bloo Inn returns to normal, a Toad in the room says he has a feeling there is something on the table. Mario has an option to ride Yoshi, but unlike other appearances, if Mario attempts doing this, Yoshi runs away.

During their adventure, Mario sits on Yoshi's saddle, armed with the Super Scope. The two have to make their way through both the Light Realm and the Dark Realm. As Yoshi navigates the terrain of Jewelry Land, Mario has to use the Super Scope to shoot down enemies in their path. If Mario accidentally shoots Yoshi in the back of the head, Yoshi takes damage.

In the end, Prince Pine and King Fret are freed from Bowser's tyranny, and they use the twelve gems recovered by Mario and Yoshi to reunite the two realms of Jewelry Land. After the two rulers give their thanks to Yoshi and Mario, the latter duo returns home to Princess Peach.

Yoshi's Island series[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]

Kamek foresees that two newborn brothers will bring ruin to Bowser's forces and attempts to capture them as the stork carries them to their mother and their father in the Mushroom Kingdom. While Kamek is successful in kidnapping Baby Luigi, his twin brother, Baby Mario, falls unnoticed to Yoshi's Island. Yoshi is taking a walk through the forest, and Baby Mario lands on his saddle, along with a map leading to Bowser's Castle, where Kamek has taken Baby Luigi.

Yoshi decides to take Baby Mario back to his clan. As the Yoshis argue about what to do with the infant, Baby Mario points to the right. Yoshi decides that his clan should rescue Baby Mario's brother and help both of them find their parents, and the other Yoshis agree. Taking the initiative, Yoshi proposes that they use a relay system between eight Yoshis to transport Baby Mario: Each Yoshi travels some distance, then hands Baby Mario to the next Yoshi. Taking the lead, Yoshi sets out in the direction Baby Mario was pointing, helping him through levels that follow.

Kamek's forces invade the island and search for Baby Mario. To battle the enemies, Yoshi uses his egg-making abilities to transform his foes and other objects into Yoshi's eggs, which he then throws at enemies. Yoshi also uses a variety of morph bubbles to transform himself into various vehicles to aid in his quest. With these skills at his display, Yoshi manages to help Baby Mario through the first level of each of the six worlds, as well as through all the secret worlds discovered along the way, and eventually Baby Bowser's Castle. He reaches Baby Bowser's bedroom in his search for Baby Luigi, and after being attacked by Baby Bowser, Yoshi defeats him. Kamek then uses his magic to transform Baby Bowser into a larger version of himself that destroys the castle, but after a long and tough battle, Yoshi defeats Baby Bowser through the use of Giant Eggs.

After the battle, in the rubble of the castle, Yoshi discovers Baby Luigi and the stork. After untying the stork, Yoshi says his goodbyes to Baby Mario and Baby Luigi as the stork returns them home.

Yoshi Touch & Go[]

Each mode begins with helping Baby Mario glide down to the forest. This is followed by a second part in which Baby Mario is on Yoshi, whose color can depend on how many Coins had been collected by Baby Mario during the first part. Yoshi retains the ability of throwing eggs to attack enemies, and he can eat most enemies (except spiked ones) to earn coins. Yoshi has to eat fruit along the way to keep refilling his egg supply. If the player loses a life as Yoshi, they can choose to restart from the beginning or start from when Baby Mario and Yoshi are together.

When they collect 100 coins, a Super Star appears. Upon touching it, Baby Mario temporarily becomes Superstar Mario, during which Yoshi is encased within a Giant Egg, just like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

In the Marathon mode, the player's goal is to see how far they can get Yoshi. After every 1,000 yards, the Yoshi is swapped out for a differently colored Yoshi.

When Yoshi and others reach Bowser's Castle, Baby Bowser finds no reason to further accompany Yoshi, and he ends up betraying the group. Yoshi refuses to continue without Baby Bowser, triggering a boss fight against Baby Bowser. Yoshi defeats Baby Bowser successfully, only for the future Bowser to appear and engage in battle with Yoshi. After Yoshi manages to defeat the future Bowser, Kamek finally cuts in and enlarges Bowser to an enormous size. Four Yoshis team up to defeat Bowser for good, after which Kamek and the Toadies quickly flee from the destroyed castle. In the end, the Yoshis manage to rescue Baby Luigi and the other kidnapped children.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Yoshi returns as the main character, retaining his usual role from previous Yoshi's Island games.

Some time after Baby Mario is sent flying to Egg Island, Yoshi and the other Yoshis agree to help Baby Mario find Baby Luigi, who had been kidnapped by Kamek shortly after it was revealed that the stork delivered the baby Mario Bros. to the wrong parents. Yoshi and Baby Mario manage to save Egg Island from becoming Baby Bowser's vacation home by defeating both him and adult Bowser, after which they proceed to rescue Baby Luigi.

Tetris Attack[]

A spirit named Hongo encases all of Yoshi's Island in a storybook to contain Bowser and his forces when they attempted to take over. Yoshi manages to convince Hongo to restore Yoshi's Island on the condition that he traps Bowser so that Hongo would no longer have a reason to keep Yoshi's Island contained.

Aside from being able to use his long tongue to defeat enemies, Yoshi can now also manipulate gravity, corresponding to the game's tilt controls. As Yoshi alters the force of gravity, he can cause enemies to fall backward or even transform walls into hills.

Every level is controlled by one of the Yoshi's Island Spirits. Unlike with other games, Yoshi can only complete a level and continue to the next if he fulfills the spirit's tasks, such as destroying a certain number of enemies or acquiring a certain number of coins.

At the end, Yoshi confronts and defeats Bowser in a boss fight, and Hongo restores Yoshi's Island to normal.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]

Kamek tries to turn all of the Yoshis on Craft Island into Wonder Wools to help build a new castle for Baby Bowser. However, he misses both Yoshi and Red Yoshi, both of whom set off on a journey to save Craft Island.

Yoshi's Crafted World[]

Yoshi and the other Yoshis are gathered around the Sundream Stone, said to make anyone's dream become a reality. However, when Kamek and Baby Bowser try to take the Sundream Stone for themselves, it breaks into five gems that scatter across the island, along with the Yoshis and villains. In the levels, the player has the choice to play as either regular Yoshi or one of the other available Yoshi colors.

After Yoshi and the other Yoshis recover four of the Sundream Stone gems, they confront Kamek and Baby Bowser and manage to defeat them. Following this, the Yoshis use the Sundream Stone to wish upon a ship that carries them back to their home island.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Yoshi appeared in all Super Smash Bros. series games as a playable character. Brawl, Yoshi's Egg Throw move is Yoshi's third jump. Yoshi's final smash is Super Dragon, where Yoshi grows wings, and can fly freely around the stage while breathing fire or shooting fireballs at opponents.

Mario & Sonic series[]

Yoshi is playable in every installment of the series.
