The Wing Cap is a hat used by Mario in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. It can be obtained by breaking open a red Cap Block. Wearing a Wing Cap enables Mario to fly after Triple Jumping or being launched from a cannon. Like the other Cap Block transformations, the Wing Cap is only temporary, and disappears after while.

In Super Mario 64[]

Unlocking the Wing Cap requires Mario to have at least 10 Power Stars. At the main floor of the Mushroom Castle, Mario must look up at a ray of light to access the secret course, Tower of the Wing Cap.

In Tower of the Wing Cap, Mario automatically receives the Wing Cap from the start, although its effects still wear off after a while. With the Wing Cap, Mario can glide down to collect eight Red Coins. In doing so, a Power Star appears on a column down in the center. The column most noticeably has a Red Switch, and Mario can press it to activate every red Cap Block, unlocking the Wing Cap for use in locations outside the Tower of the Wing Cap.

The front box art for international versions show a close-up of Mario wearing a Wing Cap.

In Super Mario 64 DS[]

Mario instead gains the ability to fly by picking up a white feather released from certain red Cap Blocks. While this adds wings to Mario's Cap, it is not necessarily the Wing Cap. The Feather only appears to Mario, so neither Luigi, Wario, nor Yoshi can use it during the adventure. In VS. Mode, other the Feather can also be used by other characters, and if Yoshi uses it, he grows wings on his back.
