Wigglers (ハナチャン , lit. Hanachan?) are a recurring caterpillar-like species in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario World. Wigglers often act as an enemy in their appearances, but some games feature them as a boss.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Wigglers have a segmented body and a big nose. They are most commonly depicted as being yellow (occasionally green) and having a cheerful expression on their faces; they also wear small flowers on their heads. When enraged, which occurs when a Wiggler is injured, the creature turns a bright red color, gains solid white eyes and gritting teeth and sometimes its flower wilts. Wigglers first appear in Super Mario World, being found in wooded areas.

Etymology[]

In Japanese, 'Wiggler' means to wiggle. Hanachan is its Japanese name, meaning 'small flower'.

In Super Mario series[]

Wiggler Classic

Wigglers are enemies first encountered in Forest of Illusion, being found in forested areas in general. Wigglers walk slowly. If Mario or Yoshi stomps on the Wiggler, it turns both red and angrier and begins moves faster. It will also follow the player instead of walking right and left until it touches something or reaches the pit. However, Yoshi can swallow Wigglers or Mario can throw a Goomba or a Koopa Shell at them. They can also be defeated by Starman. Defeating a Wiggler earns the player 200 points.

Super Mario 64/DS[]

Wiggler DS

"Everything's been going wrong ever since I got this Star...It's so shiny, but it makes me feel... strange."

A Wiggler is a boss in the thirteenth course, Tiny-Huge Island. Its den is beneath the crater lake at the highest point of the island, accessible only by ground-pounding it on the Tiny Island and then going through the resulting hole on the Huge Island.

The Wiggler's only attack is to move around; if it runs into Mario, Mario will lose three-eighths of his health. However, Mario can defeat the Wiggler by stomping on its body three times. After each stomp, the Wiggler moves faster. After Mario defeats the Wiggler, he will give the Star to Mario. Giving the star to Mario, the Wiggler shrinks.

Super Mario Sunshine[]

Wiggler SMS

Angry Wiggler

The Wiggler is a giant green caterpillar that appears in Super Mario Sunshine. It is seen in episodes two and three of the Gelato Beach area. In Japan, this Wiggler is referred to as Boss Wiggler.

In Episode 2, the Wiggler is curled up on top of the sand bird tower. The goal is to point all three mirrors at it to force it off. This is done by removing the Plungelos off each mirror causing them to tilt in its direction. After this is done, the giant falls off and a Shine Sprite appears.

In Episode 3, the Wiggler is seen awake and furious at Mario's actions. It will stomp around the stage furiously. In order to defeat it, the player must spray the sand buds with water causing the sand sculptures to rise. The monster will trip and land upside down. During this time a ground pound must be done on a designated body part. Each time this is done, the Wiggler will stand up and run even faster than before. This happens until it is defeated. Three ground pounds must be done to defeat it. When it is defeated, it will turn in to a pile of sand and sink into the ground.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

During the main adventure, Wiggler has the same role, although he turns red upon being hit twice and also becomes more aggressive. Wiggler was redesigned based on the general appearances he made at the time, not from Super Mario 64.

Wigglers are also the centerpiece of the mini-game Which Wiggler?, in which the aim is to locate and select the Wiggler that matches the one on the top screen by touching it with the Stylus.

Super Princess Peach[]

Wiggler Caterpillar

The angry Wiggler from Super Princess Peach.

A Wiggler residing in Fury Volcano appears as a boss in Super Princess Peach. When Peach arrives at the Wiggler's area, she discovers the Wiggler holding an imprisoned Toad on his nose which the Wiggler proceeds to spring into the air thus starting the battle. During the battle, the Wiggler roams around the room. The Wiggler gets angry when stomped so Peach will need to find another way to beat the Wiggler.

To defeat the Wiggler, Peach needs to become angry and pressure down on the statues (which bob down for a few seconds when stepped on with rage and spring back up). If Wiggler is above one of the statues as it springs up, he will be flipped over rendering one of his segments vulnerable. At this point, Peach can stomp the segment, every time the Wiggler takes damage, he will become enraged and start rampaging for a period of time at which point, Peach will have to avoid the Raining Debris coming down from the volcano in the background (she can end the Wiggler's rage attack quicker by springing another statue on him but this takes really good timing). After three hits, the Wiggler becomes mad and causes smoke to appear around the room. Peach takes damage with this smoke so she must get rid of it with Joy or else the smoke will kill her before she can destroy Wiggler. After Wiggler has been hit 5 times, he explodes and the Toad is freed as Peach continues the mission.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Wiggler Painting

A Wiggler from New Super Mario Bros.

Wigglers also appear in New Super Mario Bros. as rather uncommon enemies only appearing in the game's two alternate worlds in levels World 4-4 and World 7-3. They behave as they did in Super Mario World, wandering around on platforms. Wigglers aren't aggressive but when stomped, they get angry and start rampaging left and right (they can also flip over when ground pounded). Wigglers don't return to their calm state until Mario leaves the area and returns. Wigglers are very durable and can only be defeated with the effects of a Blue Shell, Starman, or a Mega Mushroom. For World 7-3, Mario or Luigi has to ride on the back of a giant Wiggler, which has 29 segments, in order to travel across the level.

The Which Wiggler? minigame from Super Mario 64 DS also returns in this game.

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Wiggler's Galaxy

A Wiggler in the Honeyhive Galaxy

Wigglers are encountered as a regular enemy, like in Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros.. They first appear in the Honeyhive Galaxy. Not so standard, because when you Ground Pound in a part of his running zone, the Wiggler will flip on it's back and start squirming and if it stays laid down, it will flip back up with intense anger, become dark red and keep running for a while. When running around enough, it returns calm. Ground Pounding directly in a segment of its body will kill it instantly. Additionally, the use of a Rainbow Star can also kill a Wiggler. Wigglers can be found in the Honeyhive Galaxy, the Beach Bowl Galaxy, the Bowser Jr.'s Airship Armada, the Gusty Garden Galaxy, and the Gold Leaf Galaxy.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Wiggler Forest

Wigglers from New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Wigglers appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where they behave similarly to the previous game. However, there are more ways to defeat a Wiggler in this game. This includes throwing a POW Block and sliding as Penguin Mario, once again the effects of a Starman can also be used. This game also introduces much larger versions of Wiggler called Mega Wigglers. Wigglers only appear in World 5-2 of the game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Wiggler Galaxy

Two Wigglers in the Puzzle Plank Galaxy

Wigglers return in Super Mario Galaxy 2 once again retaining the same behaviors as in the previous game. They can also be defeated in the same ways (with ground pounds and the effects of a Rainbow Star) however this time, ground pounding a Wiggler will flatten it's entire body rather than just the segment that was ground pounded. There are also some Wiggler that appear mad from the start. Wigglers can be found in the Puzzle Plank Galaxy, the Tall Trunk Galaxy, and the Throwback Galaxy. Mega Wigglers can also be found in the Supermassive Galaxy and unlike the basic Wigglers are completely invincible.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Wiggler Jungle

A Wiggler in the Jungles of World 3.

Wigglers are seen again in New Super Mario Bros. 2. This time, they can be found in World 3 and behave the same way as before. Wigglers can be stomped on to become enraged, they can also be used to reach items that are too high. To defeat a Wiggler, the effects of a Super Leaf, Starman, Mega Mushroom, Gold Flower, or and Invincibility Leaf will work. Wigglers are not affected by the Gold Rings however.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Wiggler Bush Woods

A Wiggler in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Wigglers return in New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe as semi-common enemies. They are mainly found in various levels of Soda Jungle, Wiggler Stampede and Wiggler Floodlands are common examples. They also behave the same as they did previously (once again getting enraged when stomped on) and can be defeated with the effects of a Starman or POW Block. In New Super Luigi U, Wigglers can also be seen in the Meringue Clouds level Wiggler Rodeo. The Mega Wiggler also returns in these games.

Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

When placed in the water, Wigglers behave much like an Eel and can swim around.

The likeness of Wiggler makes its first Mario Kart appearance in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Borrowing its green color from Super Mario Sunshine, long Wiggler-like buses called Wiggler Wagons are part of the traffic in Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City. Unlike the cars and trucks, which simply made racers spin out, Wiggler Buses flipped racers over. They are also immune to all items and attacks; if a player with a Starman hits a Wiggler, they will simply bounce back.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]

Wiggler Normal

The Wiggler telling Bowser to chow down on the Giga Carrot.

Wiggler Angry

The Angry Wiggler from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

Wiggler Down

The Wiggler is now tired in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

A giant Wiggler is owns the Wiggler Family Farm in Dimble Wood. Bowser first meets Wiggler after he yanks the Giga-carrot blocking the Wiggler's burrow. This infuriates the Wiggler, who demands that Bowser eat the carrot. As soon as Bowser finishes the carrot, the Wiggler yells at Bowser for destroying generations of hard work and care by eating the carrot (despite the fact that he told Bowser to do so in the first place). This commences a boss battle against Wiggler.

In battle, Wiggler can use two different moves. One attack involves Wiggler standing upright, his front pair of feet morph into hands. Wiggler then gets a watering can and waters the ground, where a giant Turnip grows. Two Leaf Guys then pull up the Turnip and hover above the battle on the top screen, waiting to drop it on Bowser as an attack; Bowser is able to inhale the Leaf Guys and the Turnip drops on Wiggler, damaging it. Another attack of Wiggler's involves ramming and a body slam, in which he rises up and tries to drop onto Bowser. Bowser can counter the attack by punching the Wiggler's segments, causing Wiggler to back up and lower to the point where Bowser is eventually able to punch the Wiggler's head. If Wiggler ends up falling toward, Bowser can protect himself by retreating into his shell, causing Wiggler to bounce off, although without taking damage. Like in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Wiggler is in a red, angered state by default, so Bowser has to attack all of Wiggler's segments to make Wiggler vulnerable to attacks.

Later on, the Wiggler blocks Mario and Luigi from a route in Dimble Wood. Wiggler tells them that after the events that occurred, he forbids anyone from passing without authorization. When Mario and Luigi collect six Attack Pieces, Wiggler allows them to pass.

A Wiggler appears as an ally and a boss. It is seen residing in Gloomy Woods which Paper Kamek and Kamek have trashed with their magic. This Wiggler is very similar to the one found in Paper Mario Sticker Star in a way. Mario, Luigi, Starlow, and Paper Mario feed him fruits so he can exchange them by clearing Paper Kamek and regular Kamek's trash. At the end of the woods, Paper Kamek casts a spell on Wiggler brainwashing him causing him to turn on Mario, Luigi, Starlow, and Paper Mario. After defeating both the brainwashed Wiggler and Paper Kamek, Paper Kamek flees and a very weak and battered Wiggler thanks Mario and his friends for everything and then collapses (presumably dying as the Paragoombas are shown taking him to Heaven) and Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario, and Starlow mourn and cry over Wiggler's death until Wiggler comes back down alive and well as a Flutter. He thanks Mario and his friends for allowing him to take on his true form by helping him and giving him those fruits and offers to take them to Mount Brrr. Whenever you talk to Flutter, he'll always offer to take you to Mount Brrr or Gloomy Woods depending on where you are.

In Mario Power Tennis[]

Diddy Kong, Luigi and Wiggler
Wiggler Player

Wiggler plays Tennis.

Wiggler is an unlockable playable character, being his first playable appearance in general. Bowser Jr's former voice actress also voices as Wiggler for the first time. Unlike in other appearances, this Wiggler's body is curved upwards and has two gloved hands to hold a tennis racket. He is a defensive type, like Waluigi. He has the best reach in the game, but his swing ends slowly, and he lacks power and speed. Wiggler's Offensive Power Shot is Anger Management, where he becomes mad and spins and hits the ball. Receivers that do not use their defensive power shot are knocked back and spun in a tornado, making lunges difficult. Wiggler's Defensive Power Shot, Flutter Return, allows him to morph into a Flutter and fly to get the ball. If Wiggler wins, he becomes overjoyed and becomes a Flutter, but when he loses, he transforms into his angry form.

As with all characters, this Wiggler has a trophy-winning sequence. Luigi and Diddy Kong present Wiggler his trophy, but Diddy Kong accidentally rolls a tennis ball which causes Wiggler to trip. Diddy Kong and Luigi become very anxious, knowing full well that Wiggler will blow up in anger, but Wiggler notices his trophy and calms. Luigi goes to him to see if Wiggler is okay, but Diddy accidentally trips on the ball, losing his footing and falls into onto both Luigi and Wiggler. Luigi and Diddy Kong then panic and flee as Wiggler turns red with anger and begins to chase them.

In Mario Super Sluggers[]

Wiggler is a playable character. Like in Mario Power Tennis, Wiggler has a pair of hands in the front, but this time uses it baseball. Wiggler has good chemistry with Blooper, King Boo, and Petey Piranha. Wiggler defaults as a team player for Yoshi's team, the Yoshi Eggs. Wiggler has a batting and running rating of above average. During a close play, if Wiggler is successful, he turns red and hits into the baseman. Wiggler has weak pitching and fielding skills.

In Challenge Mode, Wiggler act a roller coaster in Yoshi Park, but has lost his temper and speedily races on the track. Mario must change the direction of the rails in order to steer Wiggler off the track and calm him down. Upon doing so, Wiggler joins Mario's baseball team.

In Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Paper Wiggler

Wiggler with Mario and Kersti.

Only one Wiggler makes an appearance, but is more of an ally than an enemy. This Wiggler plays a big role as appears in World 3 where it is first woken up by a Trumpet. This Wiggler's personality is more of a little kid that loves to play. The Wiggler wants Mario and Kersti's help to help clean up the forest so he can eat again. He takes the duo to his house but unfortunately is split up into five different segments by Kamek. Only his head remains and his other four segments start running lose in World 3. After Mario and Kersti get all four pieces back, Wiggler is put back together and is happy to take the two over to the source of the poison: Whitecap Beach. As Wiggler is easily crossing the poisonous ocean, Kersti realizes that Kamek had split up Wiggler because he knew that the Wiggler could cross the ocean with no problem. After Mario defeats the source of the poison Gooper Blooper, the forest is poison free and the Wiggler is free to eat all he wants. The Wiggler isn't seen again until before World 6 where he is now a full grown Flutter. With his new wings, the Flutter takes Mario and Kersti up into the skies for the final showdown with Bowser.

In Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[]

Wigglers appear in World 5 and beyond, usually in jungle levels. They have high attack and health, and may use "Outburst" to increase the enemy team's attack power for 6 turns. When defeated, they may drop a Wood Block that contains themselves. They have no other drops. As an ally, they have low HP and Attack, but have decent Recovery, and have a level cap of 25. Their attribute is Wood, and they have no sub-attribute. Their skill is Outburst, which increases all damage dealt by 1.5x, but reduces recovery to 0 for a turn. They can be evolved into a Wiggler and Flame Chomp for 3 Flame Chomp Coins, giving them a main attribute of Fire and a sub attribute of Wood, and increased stats in all areas. Their skill is now Tantrum, increasing Fire attribute damage for the team by 1.5x, and their level cap is now 50. They can then be evolved into a Flutter and Flame Chomp for 6 P-Wings. As an enemy, they will use "First Strike", attacking when the battle starts, dealing 66% of their damage as normal, and may use "Tantrum" to increase their attack by 50%. After the 2.0 update, they gained the basic awakening of Wood Boost, increasing Wood attribute damage when matching a full row of Wood Orbs, while the Wiggler and Flame Chomp gain the awakening of Twin Target, attacking two enemies and dealing increased damage when matching exactly 4 Fire or Wood Orbs. They require Green Star Coins to Skill Up.
