Urchins are enemies first found in Super Mario World. Their primary attack is following their opponent and attacking them with its spikes. They are mostly found underwater. They are based on Sea Urchins, a real animal that lives in clean salt water.
Urchins in Super Princess Peach are found only in Subrella sections. There is not a way to defeat them at all in the game and this is the only game where an Urchin cannot be defeated.
Urchins made an appearance in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, instead of swimming, they appear on land. Red Urchins are found in fire areas. The only way to defeat them is to push them to the lava or a thrown fireball from Fire Mario. They behave like the ones underwater. A killed Urchin will produce six Star Bits.
In Super Paper Mario, there is one Sammer Guy called Urchin Lung, but his name references to the enemy, Urchin.
Urchins return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. In those games, unlike Super Mario World, they can be defeated by fireballs, or frozen with Ice Mario's ice balls, allowing the player to reach certain Star Coins. Larger and mini versions also appear; the former of which can only be defeated with a Starman.
