Trip is a gameplay mechanic in Mario & Luigi series.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Trip is a status effect in Mario & Luigi series. Outside of battles, if the enemy runs into the rear brother or the rear brother touches the enemy, the battle will begin and the brother will trip. The brother cannot move until he gets his next turn or an enemy hits him.

In Super Smash Bros. series[]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

As a gameplay mechanic in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, random tripping no longer occurs allowing player to dash-dance. Terrain that lacks traction increases the chances of tripping to 2.5%. Several of the fighters' attacks may cause their opponent to trip.

Super Smash Bros. 4[]

The tripping mechanic in Super Smash Bros. 4 no longer occurs when players perform a dash or running-turnaround. The terrain's lack of traction no longer causes tripping. However, fighter attacks can still cause opponents to trip.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

The tripping in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has no changes from the game's predecessor.
