Super Piranha Plants (でかパックンフラワー Deka Pakkunfurawā, Huge Piranha Plant, also called Mega Piranha Plants, or Giant Piranha Plants or Big Piranha Plants) are a larger variant of Piranha Plant which first appears in New Super Mario Bros.. They act just like normal-sized Piranha Plants except they're larger and are constantly snapping. They are never found inside pipes due to their gigantic size. Mario must shoot three fireballs at one to destroy the monstrous plant. When killed, they will commonly give up three to eight coins, instead of the usual one coin.

Super Piranha Plants are similar to Piranhacus Giganticus, which debuted earlier on in Super Mario Bros. 3. A difference from Super Piranha Plants is that Piranhacus Giganticus can still fit in Pipes. Other related species include Prickly Piranha Plants, Spiky Piranha Plants, and Piranha Creepers.

Super Piranha Plants are first introduced in New Super Mario Bros. They are harder to pass by with their large size and take a bit longer to defeat. Touching them will cause the player to get hurt. With its physical action, they are constantly biting. No matter where they player goes, however, they will stay in the same spot. They are commonly found in caverns and skies first appearing in World 2-3. A Super Piranha Plant can be defeated with the effects of a Mega Mushroom, a Blue Shell, or a Starman. Additionally, tossing three fireballs at them with the effects of a Fire Flower will also work.

A fully functional Big Venus Fire Trap also exists in the game's files but went unused in the game's final build.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Super Piranha Plants return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii first appearing in World 2. They behave as they did in the previous game and can be defeated with the effects of a Fire Flower or a Starman. They can still be frozen with the effects of an Ice Flower but due to their size, they will break free within an instant. Super Piranha Plants are rather common in World 6.

The Big Venus Fire Trap also appears in this game behaving similar to the smaller Venus Fire Traps.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Piranha Plants return however this time, they are slightly less common. They first appear in World 1-A and behave as they did before. They can be defeated with the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Gold Flower, Mega Mushroom, Starman, or a Invincibility Leaf. Super Piranha Plants are also among the enemies to be affected by the Gold Rings, when a Gold Super Piranha Plant is defeated, it provides bonus Coins. The Big Venus Fire Trap also returns in this game however the fireballs it spits out are now normal-sized.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

The Super Piranha Plants reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe being more common and serve the same role as they did in previous games. They can be defeated with the effects of a Fire Flower or Starman and can be frozen for a split second with the Ice Flower. Due to their size, Yoshi or Baby Yoshi cannot defeat a Super Piranha Plant but they can still spit out projectiles at one and Bubble Baby Yoshi can defeat them with his bubbles. Super Piranha Plants first appear in Acorn Plains in all three games.

The Big Venus Fire Trap makes a return in this game behaving as it did previously, additionally, the Piranhacus Giganticus returns from Super Mario Bros. 3 this time only being found in Soda Jungle.

Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Super Piranha Plants make their 3D Mario debut in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. In this game, they are slightly less common mainly appearing in levels such as Tricky Trapeze Theater. Their means of attack is also different from a standard Piranha Plant, upon sight of a foe, the start munching then descend down dazing themselves in the process, they can then be stomped to be defeated. Additionally, the Super Piranha Plant can be defeated with the effects of the Fire Flower, Super Bell, Starman, Super Leaf, Boomerang Flower, Mega Mushroom, Lucky Bell, Invincibility Leaf, and Invincibility Bell.

Super Mario Maker 2[]

Super Piranha Plants once again reappear in Super Mario Maker 2 this time as placeable enemies. They are exclusive to the Super Mario 3D World style replacing the Piranhacus Giganticus in that style. A Super Piranha Plant can be made by applying a Super Mushroom to a standard Piranha Plant. A Super Piranha Plant can be shaken to become a Big Fire Piranha Plant and it can also be given wings to become a Big Para-Piranha Plant.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Though Super Piranha Plants don't reappear in Super Mario Odyssey, a varitey of them called the Mega Poison Piranha Plant does, this time they are able to spit poison gunk in their surrounding area.

Super Piranha Plants appear in Mario Party Superstars on the board Peach's Birthday Cake. When players land on the Happening Spaces, Lakitu will offer them a Piranha Plant Egg. If the player chooses a large one (which costs 30 Coins), Lakitu, will drop a Big Piranha Plant Egg in the icing which will sprout as a Super Piranha Plant. When other players land on the Happening Space, the Super Piranha Plants take away more coins than a normal-sized Piranha Plant.

In Mario Kart Tour, a Super Piranha Plant can be seen in the course Paris Promenade. It appears atop a Pipe on the round-about. Whenever players race by, the Super Piranha Plant will snap at them. It acts identically to a normal Piranha Plant but it's larger size makes it harder to avoid. It can be bypassed harmlessly with the effects of a Bullet Bill, Mega Mushroom, or a Starman. It is immune to Shells however.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

In the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass DLC, Paris Promenade returns and so does the Super Piranha Plant, behaving as it did previously. It can once again be bypassed harmlessly with the effects of a Bullet Bill, Mega Mushroom, or a Starman.
