The Super Leaf is power-up item which appears in a few Mario games. They first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Description[]

Collecting a Super Leaf turns Mario or another character into their Raccoon form, or Tanooki form in Super Mario 3D Land. In Mario Kart 7, using a Super Leaf only adds a tail behind a character's kart temporarily.

The Super Leaf is consistently colored brown with large light brown stripes throughout its appearances. In the original Super Mario Bros. 3, due to palette limitations of the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Leaf is displayed as green from the world map inventory. Since Super Mario 3D Land, the Super Leaf was given black eyes with white pupils. The upper-left corner appears to have a circular hole within it.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

While Mario or Luigi are equipped with the Super Leaf, they become Raccoon Mario or Luigi respectively, and while in this form they can temporarily fly up into the air and attack enemies with their tail. Collecting a Super Leaf in a level is worth 1,000 points. The tail attack is one of the only ways to defeat certain enemies, such as the Fire Chomp. The attack itself is triggered by pressing the B button, causing Mario to spin around for a second. The tail attack can damage most enemies beside it.

While running as Raccoon Mario, you can actually obtain the ability to fly. In the bottom HUD is a P-Meter, which keeps track of how fast Mario or Luigi run. When the bar goes to the very top, it makes a ringing sound and flashes. When this occurs, pressing the jump button causes Mario or Luigi to begin flying up into the air, and pressing the button allows them to go slightly higher. However, a few minutes after takeoff, the P-Meter resets itself, causing them to descend again. Raccoon Mario or Luigi also starts to descend if they spin their tail. With the Super Leaf, Raccoon Mario or Luigi can slow their fall, so long as they keep fluttering their tail.

The Super Leaf is entirely useless in underwater levels as Raccoon Mario or Luigi can neither fly nor use the tail attack while underwater. As with any other power-up, if Mario or Luigi take damage from an enemy or obstacle, they lose the Super Leaf.

A Super Leaf is among the possible items that can be obtained from a Toad House. As such, if the player has a Super Leaf in their world map inventory, they can select it to have Mario or Luigi turn into their Raccoon form.

There is another item allowing Mario to use the tail attack, the Tanooki Suit, but its main addition is allowing Mario to turn into Statue form. There is another power-up, the P-Wing, that also grants flight ability, except the P-Meter is always filled.

Super Mario 3D Land[]

The Super Leaf is properly reintroduced into the Super Mario series with the release of Super Mario 3D Land. Here, it is grown on the Tail Tree, a tree located in front of Peach's Castle.

During the game's events, a powerful and violent storm blows off all the Super Leaves and are spread throughout the land. Bowser gives most of his minions the power of the super Leaves so that they could have a greater chance of defeating Mario. False Bowsers in this game are also produced by Super Leaves, a Goomba, and magic.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

It has the same abilities as it did in Super Mario Bros 3. Except now floating is used by holding the jump button instead of rapidly pressing it. there is a similar power-up called Invincibility Leaf. The tail attack is also now usable while underwater.

Super Mario 3D World[]

The Super Leaf works the same as it did in Super Mario 3D Land but there are no longer enemies that can grant it when defeated.

In Mario Kart series[]

The Super Leaf is also used as the Leaf Cup's logo since its debut in Mario Kart DS.

The Super Leaf itself has been a power-up item since Mario Kart 7. Using it temporarily adds a Tanooki tail to the user's kart. They can spin the tail to deflect other objects and spin out other karts next to them.

In other media[]

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[]

The Super Leaf makes an appearance in several episodes, functioning identically as in Super Mario Bros. 3. A major difference is that the flight has a longer duration than in the games.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]

Once Mario obtained this Power-up he swung his tail around rapidly to fly, somewhat similarly to Tails from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
