Super Mario Mario Kart Paper Mario
Not to be confused with Super Star or Power Star.

"Its power will make him invincible!"
Toad General, The Super Mario Bros. Movie

A Starman (also referred to as a Super Star, Invincibility Star, or simply a Star) is a powerful invincibility item in the Mario franchise, notably the Super Mario series and the Mario Kart series. Starmen first appear in Super Mario Bros..

Description[]

Upon picking up a Starman, Mario, Luigi, or another character becomes temporarily invulnerable to damage from most enemies and obstacles except lava, deep water, bottomless pits, or getting crushed. Any projectiles or enemies that come into contact with the user of the Starman while it is activated are either destroyed, damaged, or spun out (depending on the type of enemy and what game it is). The Starman also increases the speed of the user substantially. The user also would turn rainbow-colored for the duration of the invincibility.

Unlike most power-ups that slide along the ground, Starmen tend to bounce around making grabbing them slightly more challenging. In the 2D Super Mario games, collecting a Starman is worth 1,000 points.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros.[]

Starman Classic

Mario near a Starman.

Starmen are very rare items. Like Super Mushrooms and Fire Flowers, Starmen are found inside Question Blocks however they are far more elusive and are also more commonly seen in Hidden Blocks. Obtaining a Starman will make Mario/Luigi temporarily invincible to all enemies and enemy attacks allowing them to be destroyed with one touch. Obstacles such as Firebars (which are invincible) are an exception to this but the plumbers are still invincible to these hazards. If Mario or Luigi happens to defeat more than 8 enemies using the Starman, the scores will change to 1-Ups resulting in the plumbers getting more extra lives similar to if they stomp on several enemies in succession. This trait would later be carried to all future games.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]

Starman Hard

Mario about to grab a Starman.

Starmen return as a power-up item, along with Super Mushrooms and Fire Flowers. Just as before, they are found in Question Blocks, but because of the game's increased difficulty, Starmen are far more rare and are primarily found in cryptic Hidden Blocks. Once again, the Starman will make Mario/Luigi temporarily invincible to all enemies and their attacks. Just as before, if the Plumbers kill 8 enemies while under the effects of a Starman, they will start earning 1-Ups.

Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Starman Appear

A Starman appearing in Super Mario Bros. 2

Starmen are seen again in Super Mario Bros. 2 however this time, due to the absence of Question Blocks, they now appear once Mario/Luigi/Peach/Toad collect five Cherries in a level. When collected, Starmen will once again turn the hero invincible allowing them to destroy any enemies or hazards that may cross their path.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Starman Music

A Starman spawned from a Jump Block.

Starmen are slightly more common than before, but are still rare. They are once again found in Question Blocks or Hidden Blocks just as before and they make Mario/Luigi temporarily invincible allowing him to destroy through any enemies in his way. There are some enemies that are immune to the effects of the Starman such as the Jelectro but the plumbers are still invincible to foes such as these. If Mario/Luigi jumps, he'll do a backflip in the air as well. Starmen also appear in the Card Roulette which must be hit in order to clear a level. If the plumbers get 3 Starmen they receive 5 extra lives.

Super Mario Land[]

Starman N-A

A Starman being found in Super Mario Land

Starmen make a reappearance. They retain their ability of making Mario temporarily invincible allowing to destroy any enemies in his way. In this game, Starmen are incredibly rare only appearing a few levels mainly found inside Hidden Blocks. Unlike most games, Starmen in this game are also much smaller and lack eyes.

Super Mario World[]

Starman SNES Island

Mario about to get a Starman.

Starmen make another appearance as power-up items. They most often appear in Roulette Blocks and once again grant Mario/Luigi temporarily invincible making them immune to all enemies and their attacks. Enemies that are normally invincible such as Blarggs, Podoboos, Boos, Thwomps, and more can be destroyed with the effects of a Starman. The Starman also gives the Plumbers a flip-jump as well. Starmen on their own are incredibly rare and are rarely found in Question Blocks this time.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[]

Starman Gray

Mario near a Starman.

Starmen return as a power-up, retaining the same purpose as in earlier Super Mario series installments. The Starman is slightly more common than it was before, its effects are slightly longer, and its sprite depicts its appearance from Super Mario World. As a result, it has been increased in size (slightly) and has been given eyes.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Starman Painting

Mario near a bouncing Starman.

The Starman makes a return in New Super Mario Bros., in this game, it once again grants Mario/Luigi temporary invincibility allowing them to plow though any enemies and hazards even those that can't normally be defeated. Starmen are still very rare power-ups but they're slightly more common than they were in past games. They are most commonly found in Hidden Blocks and Roulette Blocks but sometimes also appear in Question Blocks as well, this game also introduces a new gimmick which transforms some coin-containing Question Blocks into blocks containing Starmen whilst the Plumbers are under the effects of a Starman thus allowing them to prolong the Starman's effects however once the Starman's effects run out, these Blocks will contain coins once more. The Starman's strength is heavily rivaled by that of the Mega Mushroom. A similar type of Star called the Big Star is also seen in the game's Mario vs. Luigi mode.

The Starman is the only Power-Up that cannot be carried in the item inventory. Additionally, it is also the only Power-Up that is never spawned by a Red Flying Question Block.

Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Although the Starman doesn't appear in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, a similar power-up called the Rainbow Star does. This power-up grants Mario/Luigi temporary invincibility just like the Starman, by turning them into a sparkly cosmic form known as Rainbow Mario.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Starman Light

Mario lighting up the caves with a Starman.

The Starman returns as a power-up item, retaining its abilities from previous games. As usual, it makes the heroes temporarily invincible upon being grabbed making them immune to all enemies and projectiles however this time, Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad now possess the ability to transfer its effects to one another having a Starman-effected hero carry a non-effected hero. Starmen are commonly found in Question Blocks, Hidden Blocks, and Roulette Blocks. The Starman chain-gimmick from the previous game returns in this game allowing the heroes to maintain the Starman's effects by hitting certain coin-containing Question Blocks whilst under the effects of a Starman. The Starman's effects can now also light up dark places fully illuminating the way forward. Up to 99 Starmen can also be stored in the Inventory (alongside the game's other Power-Ups) by winning them from Power-Up Panels, additionally the Gold Toad Houses automatically grant the heroes a Starman for use in tough levels.

As of this game, the Starman actually makes a sound to signify that its effects will be wearing off within a few seconds.

Super Mario 3D Land[]

Starman Clouds

Mario obtains a Starman in the Sky.

Starmen make their 3D debut in Super Mario 3D Land. Just as before, they grant Mario/Luigi temporary invincibility allowing the plumbers to plow through any enemies, they can be found in both Question Blocks and Roulette Blocks. They are most commonly found in Coin Heavens at the area's entrance. From here, the Starman can be used to knock away the enemies along the path.

The effects of the Starman are similar to that of the Invincibility Leaf however there are some key differences which include the Invincibility Leaf's effects remaining until the level is either exited or completed, additionally, the Invincibility Leaf doesn't give 1-Ups after 8+ enemies are killed unlike the Starman.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Starman Secret

Mario going to grab another Starman.

The Starman returns in New Super Mario Bros. 2 once again being semi-rare power-ups. They retain their traits from previous games, and can be found mostly in Hidden Blocks or Roulette Blocks. They also rarely appear in Question Blocks as well. The coin block-chain feature returns from past installments where Question Blocks normally containing Coins can contain Starmen instead if Mario/Luigi is under the effects of a Starman. Unlike New Super Mario Bros., the Starman can be stored in the inventory as shown with the Special Toad House located in World Star.

The contrasts between the Starman and the Invincibility Leaf from Super Mario 3D Land also exist in this game as well. The Mega Mushroom also returns in this game also possessing the Starman's run-out sound effect when it's effects are about to expire.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Starman Shore

Mario reveals a Starman.

The Starman returns in New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe once again retaining it's role and purpose from before. The Starman retains the same attributes it had from New Super Mario Bros. Wii and can once again be transferred by picking up another hero whilst under the effects of one. The Starman is also used to light up dark places (such as those in Light Blocks, Dark Tower). The Starman chain-gimmick from the previous game returns in this game allowing the heroes to maintain the Starman's effects by hitting certain coin-containing Question Blocks whilst under the effects of a Starman. Question Blocks, Hidden Blocks, and Coin Blocks all contain Starmen. Starmen can also be obtained from Toad Houses as well as Enemy Courses found on the World Map, upon beating an enemy course, you may get a Starman from the Treasure chest that appears (in New Super Mario Bros. U, the Starman had an incredibly high chance of appearing while New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the Starman's chance of appearing has been lowered in favor of other items such as the Propeller Mushroom, Mini Mushroom, and the Super Crown). A Starman can also be earned in the inventory by reaching the Flagpole with the final digits at "99".

The Boost Star (an item found in New Super Mario Bros. U) looks very similar to the Starman with the only difference being is that it is purple in color.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Starman Cave Find

Mario finds a Starman in the Caves.

The Starman returns in Super Mario 3D World as well as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. In these games, it appears just as commonly as it did in Super Mario 3D Land, it can be found in either Question Blocks, Hidden Blocks, or even Roulette Blocks. The transferring feature from the New Super Mario Bros. series returns in this game allowing those under the effects of a Starman to transfer it to others. As per usual, the Starman makes the user temporarily invincible making them immune to all enemies and enemy attacks and allowing them to kill most foes.

The contrasts between the Starman and the Invincibility Leaf from Super Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros. 2 also apply in this game as well. A new item called the Invincibility Bell was also introduced in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury which grants the heroes with the same kind of immunities as the Invincibility Leaf only combined with the effects of the Super Bell rather than the Super Leaf.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[]

Super Starman Maker

Mario finds a Starman and is ready to run the Gauntlet!

The Starman also appears in Super Mario Maker as well as it's two sequels. In these games, it is one of the power-ups (and one of the only three that appears in every style alongside the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower). The Starman can be placed either in Question Blocks or on the main field. When grabbed, Starmen will grant Mario with temporary invincibility allowing him to plow through whatever hazards may be in his way up ahead. This is so far, the first 2D game where Starmen can also be seen outside of Question Blocks.

Super Mario Run[]

Starman Dual

Luigi about to grab two Starmen.

The Starman returns in Super Mario Run retaining it's core traits from past games. In this game, the Starman is one of the game's only two power-ups (alongside the Super Mushroom) and can be found by either inside Question Blocks or by collecting all the Red Coins from a Red Ring, when obtained, Mario is granted with temporary invincibility allowing him to whiz past enemies without being hurt, it also allows him to magnetically attract Coins and other items within his radius. The Starman is rather rare in this game and is only found in several of the game's levels.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]

The Starman returns in Super Mario Bros. Wonder and functions exactly like it did from past games. However, the Starman now allows the player to draw in nearby coins.

In Mario Kart series[]

A Starman is an item typically obtained by racers who are behind in a race. Upon using a Starman, they receive temporary invincibility. The player's speed will also increase helping them catch up with other drivers. If the player makes impact with another kart the player being hit will be knocked over. In addition to being found in Item Boxes, Starmen can occasionally appear upon destroying Crates or Leaf Clumps. While the Starman is a useful item, it is usually only given to characters who are in sixth place and below when they contact the item box. During the Mario Kart series, Starmen give the character invincibility for a short time. Any item that hits the character using the Starman will be destroyed.

Storing the Starman can be a good defensive tactic as well, firing it off when incoming shells and POW Blocks are on the verge of impact. The Starman's speed boost makes it a viable means of reaching off-road ramps and shortcuts too though. See the Circuit Guide later on for specific locations of these.

Super Mario Kart[]

Starman SNES

Mario gets a Starman.

The Star appears as players are closer to the back of the pack (7th or 8th). The Starman is one of the more powerful items as those who use it become invincible, upbeat music will play as the player uses it, and their kart will flash rainbow (or yellow if in Double Dash!!) allowing them to drive into Bananas or Shells without being spun out, additionally players who hit a Starman-affected player will be knocked back thereby losing heaps of speed, players who are under the effects of a Starman also gain speed allowing them to reach the front of the pack quicker.

Mario Kart 64[]

Starman N64

Luigi gets a Starman.

The Star is once again an obtainable item. Just like in Super Mario Kart, the Starman is only really obtained when one is falling far behind due to it being one of the more powerful items. Obtaining a Starman will boost the user's speed, whilst granting them invincibility to all hazards and items as well as allowing them to knock away any racers unfortunate enough to be hit. The Starman can help those falling behind get back in the race rather quickly.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit[]

Starman GBA

Wario gets a Starman.

Just as before, the Star is an obtainable item that mainly shows up when players are closer to the back due to it being one of the more powerful items. Just as before, obtaining a Starman will make the user invincible, give them the ability to knock aside any racers while also giving them a speed boost.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]

Starman GCN

Mario and Luigi get a Starman.

The Starman returns in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, in this game, it once again appears as an item obtainable closer to the back of the pack. When used, both drivers become invincible allowing them to plow through all hazards and other racers. If a kart is hit by another under the effects of a Starman, the rear character will be knocked off the kart and will drag on the ground briefly thereby losing a lot of speed. The Starman once again provides a speed boost just as it did in previous games. Also in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! a Starman is seen with a smiling mouth. Also a truck in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City has "Star Travel" written on it. Its license plate is STR.

Mario Kart DS[]

Starman DS

Waluigi gets a Starman.

The Star returns in Mario Kart DS, in this game, it once again appears as an item obtainable commonly by those closer to the back of the pack. It once again makes the player invincible allowing them to plow through other racers and hazards. It also increases their speed making shortcuts more beneficial nerfing the off-road slowdown. There is an Item Box in DK Pass located on a shortcut hill that only contains Mushrooms and Starmen giving those that grab it a great advantage. The Starman is one of the most powerful items strongly rivaling that of the Bullet Bill. The Starman's chances of appearing depend on the "Items" rating of the vehicle you're using, it will have a higher chance of appearing the higher the "Items", vehicles low on "Items" have chances of receiving the Item mainly from 7th - 8th while vehicles higher on items also have chances of obtaining it from 5th - 8th.

Mario Kart Wii[]

Starman Wii

Yoshi gets a Starman.

The Starman returns in Mario Kart Wii once again being a powerful invincibility item obtainable by those placed from 7th - 12th. Just as before, it makes players invincible allowing them to knock aside other racers, items, and hazards. It also works as an off-road nerfing shortcut due to the speed boost the Starman provides. The Starman's strength matches that of the Bullet Bill, if players under the effects of a Starman are to hit those under the effects of a Mega Mushroom, the Mega Mushroom-affected racer will still be knocked aside and hitting a Bullet Bill-affected racer will result in the Starman-affected raccer getting a mere (non-spinning) jostle. The Starman is classed as a "Strategic Item" ("Basic Item" in PAL Regions) meaning it relies more on strategy rather than power to bring down other racers (as items such as the Blue Spiny Shell, Lightning, and Bob-omb do).

Mario Kart 7[]

Starman 3DS

Lucky Luigi gets a Starman again!

The Star returns in Mario Kart 7, once again being an item that grants the user temporary invincibility allowing them to knock aside items, players, and hazards. It also gives them a brief speed boost allowing them to catch up to the racers upahead, the Starman is one of the more powerful items (alongside the Bullet Bill) and is classed as a "Tactical Item". The Starman is mainly obtained by racers who are placed in 6th - 8th.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Starman Wii U - Nintendo Switch

Winning Waluigi gets a Starman again!

The Super Star reappears in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe once again as an invincibility item. Just like in past games, players who obtain this are granted temporary invincibility allowing them to knock aside any hazards or racers. The Starman's strength once again matches that of that of the Bullet Bill. Due to the changed Item probability formula in these games, the Starman doesn't really appear when players are in a specific place but rather has a higher chance of appearing whenever players are about 8000 units away from 1st place.

Mario Kart trivia[]

  • If the player collides with the boat in DK's Jungle Parkway in Mario Kart 64 while they have a Star, they will still get hit before plunging into the water. This also applies to the Boo item.
  • This item lasts the longest amount of time in Mario Kart 64 (effect remains about a second after the blinking stops) and lasts the shortest amount of time in Mario Kart: Super Circuit (the song barely starts its third repetition).
  • On Rainbow Road for Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Stars fall from the sky during a long stretch of track. Getting hit by one has the same effect as getting hit by the Item.
  • If the player hits a Bullet Bill with a Star, the Bullet Bill will be pushed aside.
  • In Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7 an item box in DK Pass will always give the player a Star, Mushroom, Triple Mushroom and a Red Shell the Mario Kart (series), it made the user invincible for a short period of time. During use, it lets the user smash through other players, make them faster and sand, snow or grass does not affect the speed.

In Yoshi's Safari[]

Super Star YS sprite

Super Stars are dropped from Flying ? Blocks. They grant the usual temporary invincibility effect, during which Yoshi can defeat any enemies he touches. Like other items, if a Starman is summoned from a yellow Flying ? Block, it goes into effect instantly. In Float Castle II, a Starman can also drop from a dark green Flying ? Block. A Starman grants 2,000 bonus points if dropped from a yellow Flying ? Block and 5,000 if dropped from a green one.

Yoshi series[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island/Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]

Super Star Super Mario

A Super Star below Yoshi and Baby Mario.

The Super Star makes it's debut in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. When donned, Yoshi becomes a giant Yoshi Egg and Baby Mario dons a Cape and can glide, and run up walls and ceilings. Additionally, he is invincible and can defeat basically any enemy and cannot be killed by spikes. The effects are only temporary and will wear off after some time. The Power-Up debuts in World 2 and makes infrequent appearances from there. The Super Star's theme in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a remix to the classic Starman theme from the mainline Mario games

Yoshi's Island DS[]

Super Star Pratice

A Super Star in the secret area.

The Super Star is back in Yoshi's Island DS with the same effects as before. It debuts in Baby Mario and Baby Peach: Dynamic Duo and once again grants Baby Mario the ability to glide and run up walls all while being invincible and Yoshi becoming a large Yoshi Egg. It is much less common in this game in fact the next time it is seen is at the end of World 4. In this game, only Baby Mario can obtain a Super Star, if Yoshi is carrying any other Babies, he won't be able to obtain a Super Star. From Yoshi's Island to Yoshi's Island DS, it was changed to a completely new theme.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Golden Super Star

Yoshi and Baby Mario about to obtain a Super Star.

The Super Star returns in Yoshi's New Island however it has changed in this game in comparison to it's previous appearances. It no longer bounces around and instead remains in place in the air. When Yoshi grabs the Super Star, instead of Baby Mario taking control, Yoshi is granted the ability of super fast running so fast that he can run up walls and ceilings, additionally, he can also flutter greater distances. Just as before, it is an uncommon power-up. A similar item called the Rocket Star also appears in this game.

In Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[]

Wario's Starman

Wario near a Starman.

The Starman is a power-up item, being the first game in which Wario uses it. The Starman's effects haven't changed much from the previous games and it still makes Wario invincible just as it has done with Mario/Luigi in the other games. The Star also makes Wario run even faster, a trait which was later carried in the Starman's future appearances.

In Yoshi platformers[]

While Starmen don't appear in the Yoshi series, various different types of Stars appear. Stars were used differently in the Yoshi's Island games when they are smiley faced, with blue shoes. They can be found by the player by defeating certain enemies and hitting some ? Clouds. They were used when Baby Mario fell off a Yoshi's back. The Stars would somehow make a bubble around the screaming infant, protecting him from the evil Toadies until the power of the Stars ran out. Every Star collected would add one second to the Star meter, and collecting thirty of them was essential to get a Perfect on a level.

Similar to the Starman are "Super Stars," which look like an ordinary Starman, but with no eyes. They are found in a few levels, and collecting one makes Baby Mario invincible, and somehow sport a Cape, which allowed him to glide long distances. During this, the Yoshi is sealed into a Giant Egg. After a certain amount of time, the Yoshi would return to normal and Baby Mario once again would seat himself on his back, losing his cape and invulnerability. There are also packs of Stars that come in ten or twenty.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Although Starmen don't appear in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they are mentioned during Chapter 3 in which a camera-wielding Lakitu near the Glitz Pit remarks, "Stars make you invincible?". Additionally, if Bowser eats enough meats during his sidescrolling intermissions, he will become much larger and basically invincible (as a combination of the Starman and Mega Mushroom's effects).

Super Paper Mario[]

A similar item to the Starman called the Mega Star appears in Super Paper Mario, this powerful item is essentially a combination between the effects of a Starman and a Mega Mushroom as it transforms Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Bowser into a giant, invincible, 8-bit version of themselves which can wreck havoc all over the field. Regular Starmen are absent however.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

StarmanPMSS

A Starman at Whammino Mountain in Paper Mario: Sticker Star

The Starman reappears in Paper Mario: Sticker Star making it's debut in the Paper Mario series. In this game, their purpose in this game is much like in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars as Mario turns temporarily invincible and runs though enemies without the need to battle them, upon defeat, these enemies drop a coin or two, additionally, Mario's jump is given a bit of a spin as well. Starmen are incredibly rare as they are only found in three levels: Whammino Mountain, Rustle Burrow, and Gauntlet Pond. They are also mentioned in two questions of the quiz found in Snifit or Whiffit.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[]

Micro Goomba Mass

Mario discovers a Starman and is ready to plow the dangerous mob of Micro Goombas.

Starmen make a reappearance, now being more common and appearing in levels such as Kiwano Temple and Sacred Forest. In this game, in addition to being able to kill enemies without having to engage them in battle, Mario can also walk across spiked areas without an issue. Just as before, Mario's jump while under the effects of a Starman has more of a spin to it. Unlike Paper Mario: Sticker Star, the effects of a Starman are also required this time for solving puzzles such as defeating a whole hoard of dangerous Micro Goombas which are guarding a piece of the Mini Paint Star.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

Starman Discovery

A Starman appears in the Whispering Woods.

The Starman appears as a semi-common power-up similar to the two previous games however this time, it is also seen bouncing around (similar to the mainstream games) rather than just floating idly like before. When Mario grabs a Starman, he becomes invincible to all enemies killing them upon contact without having to engage them in battle, he can also walk across spikes and move faster as well, his jump also has a spin to it as well. The Starman is first seen in Whispering Woods in this game.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]

Starman Pixels DX

Bowser Memory M ready to grab a Starman in the remake.

A digitalized version of the Starman appears in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story as well as Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. In these games, it is seen in the Memory Banks during the boss fight with Bowser Memory ML and later during the fight with Bowser Memory MLX in The Gauntlet, as apart of one of Bowser Memory M's (or Bowser Memory M X) attacks. A Starman may bounce around Bowser Memory M and he will go to grab it at which point he will dash directly at the plumbers. Coins may sometimes appear along the path and Bowser Memory M will always go to grab these coins which causes his path to switch in these instances. When Bowser Memory M dashes at the plumbers, they must jump over him and avoid him at all costs unless a coin appears above them in which case, they must stay put as Bowser Memory M will jump up to snag the coin. If one of the bros. is hit by Bowser Memory M during this state, he will be knocked away until the attack is over suffering heavy damage. Like a usual Starman, the effects are temporary for Bowser Memory M too and he is reverted back after a while ending the attack.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

While Starmen don't physically appear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, during the battle with Dreamy Mario, in one of the attacks where Mario is chasing the shadowy Antasma (who is holding Peach captive), the Dreamy Mario clones (who are running at Mario) appear to be under the effects of a Starman as they have the same rainbow glow as Invincible Mario during the attack.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]

Starman Combat

Mario getting a Starman.

Starmen have made very few appearances in the main Mario RPG series. Perhaps their only appearance as an item was in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, where Mario could occasionally find the rare item and use it to defeat enemies on the overworld (without having to go into battle with them). Doing this would, quite helpfully, still earn Mario Experience Points. Starmen, despite being such rare items in the RPGs, are briefly mentioned in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, where they are said to be an ingredient of Invincishrooms,

In Mario Party series[]

Starmen rarely appear in the series. However, a similar item named Stars appears throughout most of the games, and are the primary key to winning the boards and being crowned the Superstar.

Mario Party: Island Tour[]

Starman Item Boards

Peach with a Starman.

Starmen appear in Mario Party: Island Tour, in this game, they appear as items which double the player's Dice Block total during their turn. These Items can be really useful for catching up to rivals as well as gaining certain items. Starmen are primarily obtained as items in Perilous Palace Path and Star-Crossed Skyway.

Mario Party 10[]

Starman Above

The four players with four Starmen above them.

Starmen appear again in Mario Party 10, during the minigame Cheep Cheep Leap, players are shown standing on the boardwalk with Starmen hovering above them and grab them to be under the effects of a Starman as they knock the Cheep Cheeps, Mega Cheep Cheeps, and Gold Cheep Cheeps leaping over the bridge.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Starmen appear in the Super Smash Bros. series as well. If a player touches a Starman, they become invincible, allowing them to attack the foe without worrying about damage. However, unlike the actual Mario games, the Starman's user cannot hurt their opponents upon contact.

Trivia[]

  • Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins are the only games to have a completely different Starman theme. In Super Mario Land, it is the chorus to the famous Can-Can music.
  • In the French version, Stars are named "Super Étoile" (meaning Super Star). For unknown reasons, Super Mario Galaxy's Power Stars are also named Super Stars in the French version.
