Super Mario
This article is about an enemy. For a species in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, see Spark (Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope).

Sparks are a species of electricity-producing orbs in the Mario franchise. Sparks made their first appearance in the arcade game Donkey Kong Jr., and made its first appearance in the Mario franchise with Super Mario Bros. 2, although they were carried over from the game's original iteration, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, a non-Mario game, instead of Donkey Kong Jr..

Since The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Sparks have also been featured as an enemy in the The Legend of Zelda series. Sparks have not often appeared in the Mario franchise, as their behavior has often been taken fulfilled by Li'l Sparkies from Super Mario World and Amps from Super Mario 64. Sparks appear in more games of the The Legend of Zelda series than of the Super Mario series.

In the Donkey Kong series[]

Donkey Kong Jr.[]

Sparks are encountered in Mario's Hideout, where Mario creates them to try and electrocute Donkey Kong Jr. and prevent him from rescuing Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)[]

One Spark is encountered in Stage 6-4.

In Super Mario Bros. 2[]

They move in a set pattern around platforms or walls. Sparks repeatedly flash between white to black every second. If touched, the player's character—either Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Princess Toadstool—takes damage and loses a unit of their health. Aside from this, the screen briefly shakes as well. A Spark can be defeated either from the effects of a Starman or by throwing a vegetable at it. In Super Mario Advance, certain jars contain a Spark Chaser that gets rid of the Sparks.
