Save Blocks are a type of block featured in the Mario role-playing games, having first appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Hitting a Save Block allows the player to save their game progress.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]

Save Block SMRPG sprite

Save Blocks have a 3D shape and are golden in color, having a large star at the top. It also has a big "S" in rainbow color on different sides of the Save Block. The Save Blocks in this game are also usually found in Inns or before a boss fight.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario[]

Save Blocks are fully rainbow in color with a giant "S" in the color white and is on all four sides of the Save Block. Save Blocks in this game are usually found with Heart Blocks before a new area or before a boss fight. Unlike Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Save Blocks in this game must be hit from underneath in order to activate it.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door[]

Save Block PMTTYD sprite

Save Blocks are similar in design to the ones in Paper Mario. They also appear in newer areas, before boss fights, and next to Heart Blocks.

Super Paper Mario[]

Save Blocks reappear again, retaining their design from the previous Paper Mario games. However, Save Blocks in this game appear to be a lot less common than in the last games only appearing before a boss battle.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Save Blocks return, and much like those Super Paper Mario, they play a much smaller role due to the game itself saving many times. Like the earlier installments, a Save Block usually appears alongside a Heart Block before a boss fight.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[]

Save Blocks make a reappearance, having more a glow to their appearance. Unlike before, hitting a Save Block automatically saves the game rather than ask for the player's confirmation to save their progress.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]

Save Album MLSS sprite

It is instead named Save Album due to bearing the appearance of an album. It has a light blue hardcover case and a yellow capital "S" on the cover. Just like Save Blocks, Mario or Luigi can activate a Save Album by hitting it. The Save Album faces left, likely because Japanese books are read from right-to-left, and the game's developer AlphaDream is based in Japan.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]

Save Album MLPiT sprite

The Save Album makes a reappearance. It now has a light purple hardcover with a rainbow-colored capital "S" on the cover. Just as before, the Save Album faces to the left.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]

Save Blocks similar to those from the Paper Mario series appear instead of Save Albums like in the first two Mario & Luigi installments. Inside Bowser's body, yellow Emoglobins act as the equivalent for Save Blocks.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

Save Blocks are now colored blue and white. They can also be found in certain areas but due to being able to save anywhere at anytime in this game, Save Blocks tend to be used less often.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]

Save Albums return from the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Given that saving is also a Menu option, just like in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Save Blocks serve less of an essential purpose than before.

Trivia[]

  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is the first (and so far only) Mario role-playing game to not have any Save Blocks or Save Albums, with the menu being the only way to save one's game progress.
