Rip Van Fish are a species of fish that appear in Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They are usually found sleeping. When near one, Mario or Luigi wakes it up, and it pursues the Bro. until it can defeat them. If they get to far from Mario, they will fall back asleep. Mario and Luigi cannot defeat these enemies unless they use a Starman or have their Yoshi eat them.

Etymology

They were named after Rip Van Winkle, a character from Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle. The character supposedly spent nearly 100 years asleep, much like the Rip Van Fishes' constant sleeping patterns.
