Koopa Paratroopa (パタパタ, Patapata), often named Paratroopa for short, is a recurring enemy in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario Bros..

Profile[]

Physical description[]

A Koopa Paratroopa is a variant of Koopa Troopa with wings on its shell, allowing it to fly. Unlike regular Koopa Troopas, which are associated with Green Shells by default, a Koopa Paratroopa is associated with a Red Shell by default, mostly because the playable Koopa Paratroopas often wears a Red Shell, such as in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! or Mario Power Tennis. In the early Paper Mario series games, the enemy Paratroopas wear sunglasses to distinguish themselves from friendly Paratroopas.

Paratroopas, just like Koopa Troopas, were initially quadrupedal, but since Super Mario World, both of them have become bipedal.

Behavior[]

Paratroopas make use of their wings by flying in the sky, either in a horizontal or vertical pattern. If jumped on, a Paratroopa loses its wings and becomes a regular Koopa Troopa.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros.[]

Paratroopas are first encountered in World 1-3. Red Paratroopas fly up and down while green Paratroopas either jump around or fly left and right. Mario or Luigi can defeat a Paratroopa either by shooting a fireball at it in their Fire form or by touching it while under the effects of a Starman. Stomping on a Paratroopa turns it into a regular Koopa Troopa. Due to a possible programming oversight, red Koopa Paratroopas that lose their wings walk off ledges as if they are green Koopa Troopas. Defeating a Koopa Paratroopa earns the player 400 points.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]

Paratroopa Red Classic
Paratroopa Green Classic
Paratroopa Dark Classic

Paratroopas reappear as enemies and retain their behavior from Super Mario Bros.. Paratroopas are more common, and some levels feature more Paratroopas than Koopa Troopas or Goombas. Paratroopas are found frequently during several platforming sections but can be defeated in the same ways. Just as before, the green ones hop around while the red ones float around. In these instances, however, green Koopa Paratroopas are recolored gray due to palette limitations. In this game, green Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-1, being one of the first enemies encountered, and red Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-3. World 7-3 is the only level in which green Paratroopas can fly whereas the other green Paratroopas only hop. Some levels require Mario or Luigi to jump off Koopa Paratroopas in midair to travel across pits that they cannot otherwise go across.

In the Super Mario All-Stars remake, the green Paratroopas retain their usual color, similar to Green Cheep Cheeps no longer appearing green.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Red Paratroopa NES

Paratroopas act the same as in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, but they are not very common. The Green Paratroopas retain their behavior of hopping whereas the red ones fly around. Aside from fireballs, a Paratroopa can now also be defeated from a hammer thrown by either Mario or Luigi in their Hammer form.

In Giant Land, there are larger Paratroopa variants named Colossal Koopa Paratroopas, although only those with a Green Shell. Aside from being a larger size, Colossal Koopa Paratroopas are essentially the same as Paratroopas and not any more powerful than them, similar to the relation between other giant-sized enemies with their regular counterparts. Stomping on a Colossal Paratroopa turns it into a Gargantua Koopa Troopa, and defeating a Paratroopa is now worth a lower value of 100 points.

Super Mario World[]

Paratroopas return as enemies, acting largely the same as before. They are first encountered in Yoshi's Island 3. Just like before, a Paratroopa can be stomped on to have it lose its wings, but Yoshi can stomp a Paratroopa to defeat it instantly. Alternatively, Mario or Luigi can also Spin Jump onto a Paratroopa to defeat it instantly. If Caped Mario or Caped Luigi spins their cape onto a Koopa Paratroopa, it falls into its shell.

Aside from the returning green and red varieties, there is also the rare yellow Paratroopas, found only in two Special World levels: Awesome and Funky. Green Paratroopas either jump in a single direction, some higher than others, or fly in one direction. Red Paratroopas fly back and forth horizontally or vertically, though some continue to fly horizontally in a single direction. Yellow Paratroopas chase after Mario or Luigi and jump over any shells in front of them, although not from behind. Jumping on a yellow Paratroopa turns it into a yellow Koopa Troopa. Although there are blue Koopa Troopas, they do not have a winged variant. Defeating any Koopa Paratroopa earns the player 200 points.

Super Princess Peach[]

Paratroopa Sky

A Red Paratroopa floating.

Both green and red Paratroopas are encountered as common enemies. Like the original Super Mario Bros., the green ones hop around while the red ones float around. Any attack can defeat either Paratroopa. There are also colorful varieties of Paratroopas, the Mad G. P-Troopa and the G. R. P-Troopa.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Paratroopa Green

A Green Paratroopa

Paratroopa Red

And a Red one

Paratroopas are encountered as enemies more often, and retain their usual behavior. Both varieties of Paratroopa can either hop or float, regardless of its shell color. Unlike Koopa Troopas, Paratroopas do not move to the music. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in World 1-4. Performing a Ground Pound on a Koopa Paratroopa immediately causes it to be sent spinning in its shell at a very fast pace. Mario can defeat a Paratroopa by either spinning into one while in their Shell form or by throwing a Fireball at it while in their Fire form. Defeating a Paratroopa earns the player 200 points, like in Super Mario World.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Paratroopa Skies Wii

Paratroopas return as enemies again. Unlike New Super Mario Bros., Paratroopas now dance to the music while flying. Performing a Ground Pound on a Paratroopa now also defeats it with a single hit. Paratroopas can be defeated easily with fireballs, as before. Ice Balls can freeze a Paratroopa in mid-air, after a few seconds, the frozen Paratroopa will descend, and shatter upon hitting the ground. Just like before, either Paratroopa color can both either hop and float. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in the game's World 1-4 equivalent. They may also appear in Kamek's boss fight, as he can use his magic to transform platforms into Koopa Paratroopas.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Paratroopa Ring

The Paratroopas from New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Both Red and Green Paratroopas return as enemies, largely having the same behavior as before. Like in earlier New Super Mario Bros. titles, both color variations of Paratroopa can either float or hop, although a difference is that some green Paratroopas fly in a circular formation instead of either vertically or horizontally. Like most sidescrolling platformers, Paratroopas make their first appearance in the first athletic level of the game, being World 1-3. Red Paratroopas do not appear as often as green ones.

As usual, a Paratroopa can be defeated from either a Fireball or being Ground Pounded onto. Stomping a Paratroopa turns it into a standard Koopa Troopa. The use of Raccoon Mario's tail flips the Paratroopa upside down in its shell, and one of Gold Mario's balls can easily destroy a Paratroopa for additional coins.

While the effects of a Gold Ring are activate, every Paratroopa becomes a Gold Koopa Paratroopa. They can be stomped on for bonus coins, and when their shell is thrown, it leaves behind a trail of coins as it rolls. Gold Paratroopas can either hop around or float around as well.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Paratroopa Flying Ups

A Paratroopa in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Red and green Paratroopas also appear in New Super Mario Bros. U, its variation New Super Luigi U, and both games' remake New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Paratroopas can be frozen from an ice ball, like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and defeated from either a fireball or a Ground Pound. Paratroopas can either hop or float in the air, regardless of their shell color.

Paratroopas are first encountered in Layer Cake Desert's first level, Stone-Eye Zone, later on than in most of their appearances. In New Super Luigi U, they first appear much later in the game, in Soda Jungle's Dancing Blocks, Poison Swamp. Paratroopas are encountered less often than in the earlier games in general.

Super Mario Maker/Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS/Super Mario Maker 2[]

Paratroopa Maker

A Paratroopa in Super Mario Maker.

Koopa Paratroopas are enemies in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2 just like in past 2D Mario games. They can be created by combining a Koopa Troopa with a pair of wings. Green Paratroopas continuously leap on the ground in a zigzag pattern, whereas red Paratroopas fly up and down on a vertical route. In Course Maker, one way to create a Colossal Koopa Paratroopa is by dragging a Super Mushroom onto a Paratroopa.

Super Mario Run[]

Paratroopa Run

Red Koopa Paratroopas reprise their role from the 2D Super Mario platformers, and they can fly in either a vertical or horizontal path.

In Yoshi's Safari[]

Green Paratroopa Yoshi Safari sprite

For this appearance, their name is spelled Koopa Para Troopas. They are enemies encounered in groups, hovering up and down a bit while moving closer to the screen. Koopa Para Troopas come in four colors—green, yellow, blue, and pink—but all of them act the same as one another. A Koopa Para Troopa can be defeated with one shot from the Super Scope, normally worth 150 points, but is 300 in Hard Mode.

In Hotel Mario[]

Flying Koopa HM sprite

They are encountered as enemies, now with the name Flying Koopas. Only the green Flying Koopas are encountered, and they are first seen in Lemmy's High-ate Regency Hotel, flying in a diagonal motion. Flying Koopas have a tougher variant named Z Koopas.

In Yoshi's Island series[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island/Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]

Paratroopa Yoshi
Paratroopa Frozen

Here, they are named Para-Koopa. Like Super Mario Bros., the green ones hop while the red ones float. Para-Koopas make their debut in the level Visit Koopa And Para-Koopa. They are rather common in World 4. Unlike Super Mario World, a Yoshi cannot defeat a Para-Koopa from a single stomp, but doing this turns it into a Koopa Troopa. Alternatively, a Yoshi can throw an egg at the Para-Koopa to defeat it. A Para-Koopa can be defeated instantly by either Ground Pounding it or breathing fire at it. They can also be frozen from Yoshi's ice breath if he has an Ice Melon in his mouth.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

Paratroopas Museum

Paratroopas (under the name Parakoopa) are somewhat common enemies. They first appear in Glide Guys Take to the Skies alongside the Koopa Troopas. Just as before, the differences are consistent as the green ones float while the red ones hop around. A Parakoopa can be defeated with a ground pound or Baby Bowser's fireballs, and their wings can be knocked loose with a stomp or a egg toss. In the Island Museum, Paratroopas can be found in the Land Exhibit.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Paratroopa Egg Island

A Paratroopa from Yoshi's New Island.

Paratroopas return as enemies, and it is the first Yoshi game to give them their standard name. Paratroopas retain their behavior, but received an updated design to match the game's aesthetics. Like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Paratroopas are commonly encountered in the game's World 4 equivalent. They can be defeated from a Ground Pound, and stomps and egg throws can once again turn one into a regular Koopa Troopa.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]

Sky Troopa SMRPG sprite

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars artwork

They make a reappearance as enemies named Sky Troopas, and are encountered in Mushroom Way, Bandit's Way, and Booster Pass. Sky Troopas are fought either alone or in pairs. Every Sky Troopa wears a Red Shell, and unlike other appearances, Sky Troopas do not lose their wings upon taking a hit. Regular Koopa Troopas in general do not make an appearance. Because of its shell, a Sky Troopa has a high Defense compared to other enemies fought earlier on. Additionally, Sky Troopas use their shells for offense. To attack, a Sky Troopa hides in its shell and rams into their opponent with force.

In Mushroom Way, some Sky Troopas guard Treasure Boxes while others actively pursue Mario. Toad is kidnapped by one of the Sky Troopas. At Mushroom Way and Booster Pass, Sky Troopas also aid Spikeys in battle if the Spikeys are attacked.

In the last area of Bandit's Way, while Mario chases Croco, he can optionally fight four Sky Troopas, who do not otherwise appear in the area. These Sky Troopas are found flying in the sky and do not actively chase after Mario, so he has to jump at the Sky Troopas in order to fight them.

There is a notable Sky Troopa character named Sergeant Flutter, a reformed Sky Troopa who leads a large squad of friendly Sky Troopas. These Sky Troopas help out Mario in his quest for the Star Pieces at the behest of Monstro Town's leader, Monstermama. These Sky Troopas assist Mario to ascend a steep cliff located at the end of Land's End so that he can access Bean Valley and eventually Nimbus Land. Mario can ascend the area by jumping from one Sky Troopa to the next. If Mario quickly goes up the cliff by bypassing the normal sequence of Sky Troopa hops, he is rewarded with prizes.

Sky Troopas have a bulky relative named Heavy Troopa, which in turn is a relative of Tub-O-Troopa. Sky Troopas also have stronger relatives named Malakoopa, which wear a Green Shell instead of a red one.

In Mario Tennis series[]

Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64)[]

Happy Paratroopa

Paratroopa's first playable role is in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64. Here, Paratroopa is classified as a Tricky character, meaning that its shots have a high curve and spin to them to mess up opponents. However, Paratroopa serves from low reach, which means that it has trouble reaching balls. When Paratroopa loses, it loses its wings and becomes a normal Koopa Troopa. In the game's intro, Paratroopa participates in the tournament and loses to Luigi, allowing him to advance to a semi-finals match against Princess Peach.

Mario Power Tennis[]

Mario power tennis (1)

Paratroopa has netted an easy win in Mario Power Tennis.

Paratroopa is an unlockable character. He is unlocked by completing every World Open cup in Doubles. Paratroopa's Offensive Power Shot is Energy Ball, in which he engulfs the ball in a purple light and lobs it, slowing the receiver if they return it. Paratroopa's Defensive Power Shot is Sky Dive, in which he jumps into the air and flies at the ball.

Mario Tennis Aces[]

Paratroopa New Tennis

Paratroopa starts up in Mario Tennis Aces.

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Mario Tennis Aces in both playable and non-playable capacities. While they can appear as audience members on various stages, a red Koopa Paratroopa reappears as a playable character, available in the game's version 2.0.0 update, being unlocked by participating in the November 2018 online tournament, otherwise available for everyone after the end of this tournament. He returns as a Technical character, but notably has a strong curve on his slices. His sideways Trick Shot is Koopa Boost, which resembles his lunge from Mario Power Tennis, and his forward Trick Shot is Roll Call. His Special Shot, the Spiral Special, involves him and two other Paratroopas flying about and generating a tornado.

Before his official announcement as a playable character, Koopa Paratroopa's emblem had been seen on a bag available as a preorder bonus in Japan.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario[]

There are both friendly and enemy Paratroopas, like with Koopa Troopas. The Paratroopa and Koopa Troopa enemies wear sunglasses to distinguish them from the friendly characters, and all enemy Paratroopas wear a Red Shell. One of Mario's partners is a Paratroopa mailman named Parakarry.

The enemy Paratroopas are found in Pleasant Path, and they usually attempt to perform a Shell Shot on Mario as a First Strike for when he approaches. During battle, Paratroopas use Shell Shot as their main attack. They are invulnerable to Hammer attacks but remain weak to a Jump attack, which turns one into a Koopa Troopa, like in the platforming games. If a Paratroopa is tipped onto its shell, it is defenseless.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Koopa Paratroopas are enemies first encountered in Hooktail Castle, where they still attempt to perform a Shell Shot on Mario if he is nearby. Just as before, the Paratroopa enemies wear sunglasses. Paratroopas are fought similarly as in Paper Mario, except that they now do two damage, instead of one. Three additional variants were introduced for Paratroopa: KP Paratroopa, Shady Paratroopa, and Dark Paratroopa, the latter of which started out as unused content in Paper Mario.

Super Paper Mario[]

Koopa Paratroopas are frequently encountered as enemies. This is the last Paper Mario game in which they wear shades. On the field map, Koopa Paratroopa's movement pattern differs depending on its color, as green ones jump around, while red ones fly in the air in straight lines, horizontally as well as vertically, much like in Super Mario Bros.. Paratroopas appear in Chapter 1-2, 2-1, and Room 11 in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Red Paratroopas are encountered as enemies in World 2. They were also given a variant named Shiny Paratroopa.

Koopa Paratroopas are also in a few minigames. In What Goes Up..., the goal for each character is to reach the highest altitude within the time limit, which they can do by jumping from one Koopa Paratroopa to the next. If a character jumps at a Paratroopa from below, they are briefly knocked downward. In Odd Card Out, a Paratroopa is one of the different cards that the player has to select.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]

A Paratroopa is only mentioned once by a Toad who says that he wishes he had Paratroopa wings or a Lakitu's Cloud to fly to a remote Time Hole. Aside from this, Paratroopas are also mentioned in the description for the Paraslacks.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]

During their journey, Mario and Luigi encounter three Blue Paratroopas, who teach both of them how to use the Blue Shell technique. Similar to Paratroopas from the Paper Mario games, the Koopa Paratroopa Trio members also wear sunglasses. One of the members of the Elite Trio, Corporal Paraplonk, is a red Paratroopa who wears green shoes and a red bucket on his head. Regular red Paratroopas can be found in Bowser's Castle.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

A few green Paratroopas make a few small appearances, but no red Paratroopas appear aside from Corporal Paraplonk. In Dreamy Driftwood Shore, during Corporal Paraplonk's attack in the battle against the Elite Trio, a pair of Paratroopas each appear with a purple block, placing one in line with Mario, to both sides of him. Two green Paratroopas can later be seen in Dreamy Neo Bowser Castle. In Neo Bowser Castle, after Bowser betrays Antasma and takes the Dream Stone, a Paratroopa is seen carrying Princess Peach. In the final battle, Dreamy Bowser creates Paratroopa variants named Dreamy Paratroopas to send after Mario and Luigi.

Both green and red Paratroopas exclusively appear as both enemies and recruitable allies in the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser campaign. Their Special Skill is Cranium Crush. Red Paratroopas have an advantage against spear-wielding enemies. The in-game description for a green Paratroopa is, "A harmony of heavy shell and light wings. They spin around in the air and attack their enemies from above!" The in-game desription for a red Paratroopa is "A harmony of heavy shell and light wings. Strong against Spear Guys and other spear-wielding enemies.
