New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a game for the Nintendo 3DS, by Nintendo. Though it is considered the sequel of New Super Mario Bros., it is actually the third (New Super Mario Bros. Wii preceding from it as the second) but this game takes place directly after New Super Mario Bros.. It is the thirteenth game in the Super Mario series and the eighth in the Super Mario Bros. series. This was also the first retail game to be available as a digital download in the Nintendo Eshop.
Description from the American website: "Trouble always seems to find its way to the Mushroom Kingdom! Just as Mario™ and Luigi™ go off on a coin hunt in the sky, their beloved Princess Peach™ is kidnapped by the dastardly Koopalings. The brothers have to venture through over 80 stages to rescue her, grabbing an endless deluge coins across land, water, air, ice and snow along the way."
The gameplay is very similar to previous the New Super Mario Bros. games. However, New Super Mario Bros. 2 focuses on collecting Coins, with many and varied ways to collect many coins at once, such as golden items that award the player many coins. Like New Super Mario Bros., the bottom screen displays a kind of map, showing the length of the level and where the player is. There are 9 Worlds, 6 main worlds and three special worlds. The item storage reappears too. Each world contains a random number of levels, including Ghost Houses, Fortresses and Castles. Reznors and Koopalings are found at the end of each fortress and castle, respectively.
A two-player mode is available, and the second player plays as Luigi, normally through the stages alongside Mario. This mode can only be played with two Nintendo 3DS consoles and two game cards. Another mode, the Coin Rush, challenges the player to collect the most coins they can in three randomly-selected levels through three different options. The Mushroom option will choose three levels from the starter worlds and a special world, the Fire Flower option chooses three levels from the middle worlds and the Star option choose three levels from the final worlds. In other words, Mushroom is the easy difficulty choice, Fire Flower is the medium choice and Star is the hard choice.
Also, Coin Rush records can be exchanged via Streetpass and challenged. Beating another player's record results in getting a Crown Coin (worth 1000 coins). SpotPassing allows the player to put their total into the Worldwide Coin Total.
The game's overall objective is to collect a million coins. The reward for collecting 1 million coins is a new title screen featuring a Gold Mario statue. Downloadable content will be available just after the launch of the game.

|Mario||Mario the main character of the game. He has been saving Princess Peach from Bowser for a long time and has agreed to save her again traveling through various worlds to defeat Bowser and get Peach.|
|Luigi||Luigi is also a playable character in this game, playable both in Multiplayer and Singleplayer. However, the player cannot play as him in Singleplayer until the Bowser is defeated for the final time in the game. Once donce, the player can hold the L and R buttons at the same time and select a file. When the file is loaded, Luigi will be playable.|
|Reznor||Reznors are dinosaurs that are on a rotating platform. They will breath out Fireballs at the player. The player will have to hit them from under to defeat each one. After taking out half of the Reznors, the bridge will break making it harder in the battle.||World 1-|
|Reznors appear once again as the fortress boss of World 2. Unlike their first battle, the battle now feaures four Reznors. These Reznors must be defeated by hitting them from underneath. After taking out half of the Reznors, the bridge will break making it harder in the battle.||World 2-|
|Reznors are the fortress boss of World 3. Once again, four Reznors are fought. They each must be defeated by hitting them from underneath. After taking out half of the Reznors, the bridge will break making it harder in the battle.||World 3-|
|Reznors once again appear as the chilly World 4 fortress boss. This battle has four Reznors, but two wheels. They each must be defeated by hitting them from underneath. After taking out half of the Reznors, the bridge will break making it harder in the battle.||World 4-|
|Reznors serve as the fortress boss of World 5's fortress. Similar to the previous battle, these Reznors are fought on two wheels. They each must be defeated by hitting them from underneath. After taking out half of the Reznors, the bridge will break making it harder in the battle.||World 5-|
|Reznors are fought for the last time as the fortress boss of World 6. These Reznors are fought on a giant 8-blocked wheel, but features four Reznors. They each must be defeated by hitting them from underneath. After taking out half of the Reznors, the bridge will break making it harder in the battle.||World 6-|
|Roy Koopa||Roy Koopa appears as the first castle boss. Roy will perform a Shoulder Bash toward the player. To defeat Roy, the player must stomp him three times. Stomping him the first two times will cause him to retreat into his shell. After retreating out of his shell, Roy will shoot a Magic Bolt at the player.||World 1-|
|Iggy Koopa||Iggy Koopa appears as the castle boss of World 2. Iggy appears riding a Chain Chomp, while uncommonly shooting Magic Bolts. The player must stomp Iggy three times to defeat him. Although being stomped three times will make the Chain Chomp angry, and will charge upward or downward.||World 2-|
|Wendy O. Koopa||Wendy, as well as the rest of the Koopalings, reappears in New Super Mario Bros. 2 as the boss of World 3's castle. She throws her wand and performs a twirl before catching the wand, like in the previous game, before battling Mario once again. Much like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, her battle once again takes place underwater, although this time, there are four blue pipes (two on each wall) where groups of three Cheep-Cheeps swim out when Wendy jumps through the water. Two Cheep-Cheeps also jump from the water while she attacks in her shell. She also needs to whistle in order to fill the room up with water and to get rid of it. After a short period of time, the water disappears, but it comes back again if Wendy is stomped on. After three stomps on her head, Wendy is defeated, leaving behind the key to World 4.||World 3-|
|Morton Koopa Jr.||Morton reappears in New Super Mario Bros. 2. This Koopaling is fought similarly to Roy in the predecessor. He is fought in the castle ofWorld 4 and will stomp his foot and growl at Mario, like he did in the previous game. In his battle, he will create Spiked Balls using his wand during the battle and use Ground Pounds to stun all players that are on the floor. Just like the other battles with the Koopalings the player has to jump on him to defeat him. Unlike the other Koopalings, because of the nature of his "boss fight" with Mario, he doesn't spend a limited amount of time in his shell upon being stomped, as he requires a pipe upon being stomped on to return to his position. After three stomps, Morton is defeated, leaving the key to World 5||World 4-|
|Ludwig von Koopa||Ludwig, alongside the other Koopalings, reappears in New Super Mario Bros. 2. He is the World 5 castle boss. He'll once again look away and snicker before battling Mario. In his battle, Ludwig uses his Flutter Jump ability to grab one of the five chains hanging from the ceiling to attack Mario with three blue fireballs, while Mario has to use the five grey pipe cannons on the floor to blast himself against Ludwig fast enough. After that, Ludwig falls onto the floor and gets dizzy. Then Mario can jump on his head. After stomping him once, he starts to shoot four fireballs. After two stomps, the chain Ludwig hangs on starts to swing, making it harder for Mario to hit him but still shoots four fireballs. After another stomp, Ludwig is defeated, leaving the key to World 6.||World 5-|
|Lemmy Koopa||Lemmy is fought at the end of World Flower's castle. This battle is similar to his first encounter in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The stage is now a conveyor-belt, however, and on the ceiling is a button that switches its direction. If the conveyor is going in the direction towards Lemmy after he summons three balls, he will change the direction by summoning another ball that hits the switch. After three stomps, Lemmy is defeated and falls off the stage.||World Flower-|
|Larry Koopa||Larry Koopa appears as the castle boss of World Mushroom. Larry's battle takes place in a room with Four Stone Pillars, with two coming out each time. Larry will bounce around the course, and will shoot Magic Bolts that bounce off of the walls. Larry must be stomped three times to be defeated. After the first two hits, Larry will retreat into his shell and slide around the course.||World -|
|Goomba||Goombas are fungi-related creatures that use to reside in the Mushroom Kingdom. Goombas are very common enemies, that only walk around. Their weakness? They're pretty much vulnerable to anything harmful.||World 1-1|
New Super Mario Bros. 2 has nine worlds, six of which are part of the game's story mode and two of which are secret.
- World 1: The first world of the game is a grassland world. It has five normal levels, a secret level, a tower, a castle, and a cannon shooting to World Mushroom.
- World 2: The second world of the game is a desert world. It has five normal levels, a ghost house, two secret levels, a tower, and a castle.
- World Mushroom: The first secret world of the game is accessed by using the cannon in World 1. Its levels have a mix of themes.
- World 3: The third world of the game is a mix of a beach and a jungle. It has five normal levels, a ghost house, two secret levels, a tower, a castle, and a cannon shooting to World Flower.
- World 4: The fourth world of the game is a snow world. It has five normal levels, a ghost house, three secret levels, a tower, and a castle.
- World Flower: The second secret world of the game is accessed by using the cannon in World 3. Its levels have a mix of themes.
- World 5: The fifth world of the game is a sky world. It has six normal levels, a ghost house, a secret level, a tower, and a castle.
- World 6: The sixth world of the game is a volcano world. It has five normal levels, a ghost house, two secret levels, a tower, and Bowser's Castle.
- World Star: The third secret world of the game is accessed by completing World 6 and collecting 90 Star Coins to access the courses. Its levels have a mix of themes.
