Miis are digital avatars representing the player that can be created on a Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, or Nintendo Switch via the Mii Channel/Mii Maker. Their first appearance in a Mario-related game is WarioWare: Smooth Moves.

In a few of their playable appearances, Miis have an identical average rating for each stat, and their favorite color often matches the color of their outfit.

"Mii" is derived from "me," and is deliberately spelled similarly to Wii, which is derived from "we".

In Mario Party 8[]

Miis are playable in Mario Party 8, although only in the minigames in the Extra Zone. They make a background appearance in Free Play Arcade minigames in the Minigame Tent such as Sick and Twisted, Shake It Up, Grabbin' Gold, Chump Rope, Bumper Balloons, Sugar Rush, Blazing Lassos, Breakneck Building, Balancing Act, Cardiators, Pour to Score, Fruit Picker and Stampede.

The Miis wear overalls, gloves, and shoes, similar to Mario and Luigi. The color of their shirt varies for each player: including blue for the first player, red the second player, green for the third player, and yellow for the fourth player.

In Mario Strikers Charged[]

Miis are only used as avatars representing each of the players.

In Super Mario Galaxy[]

Miis make a cameo appearance as one of the icons that the player can use to customize their save file.s.

In the Mario & Sonic series[]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)[]

Miis are among the playable characters, although not in the Nintendo DS version, given that said system does not have Mii avatars. Miis have perfect average stats, all of which are 5 out of 10. They do not speak or make any noises.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[]

Just as before, Miis do not appear in the Nintendo DS version. Using Star Tokens, the player can customize their Miis to wear various clothing and accessories, such as shoes, gloves, shirts and head gear, all of which affect their stats accordingly. Miis can even wear different costumes of the playable characters in the game.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)[]

Just as before, the player can customize their Mii to wear various clothing items, which are obtained from playing Olympic events and London Party mode.

In the Super Smash Bros. series[]

Mii Fighter

The first appearance of Miis is as player avatars in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They were considered as playable fighters, but Masahiro Sakurai decided against it because he thought it would promote bullying and felt that Miis were intended to be lighthearted.[1]

Nevertheless, Miis became playable characters in the following installments Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, in which they are titled Mii Fighters. There are three different Mii Fighters, each with a unique moveset: Mii Gunner, which is the most defensive, normally and specially, Mii Brawler, which is good at agility like in running and wall kicks, and Mii Swordfighter that is the most powerful of them all, normally and specially.

In Dr. Mario & Germ Buster[]

Aside from Dr. Mario, Miis are also playable characters.

In the Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart Wii[]

Miis appear both as background characters and unlockable playable character. To unlock them, the player has to clear Special Cup on 100cc. Miis have two outfits: Mii Outfit A, a plain racing suit of the Mii's favorite color, and Mii Outfit B, which gives a different outfit depending on the gender; for the latter outfit, a male Mii is given overalls over a shirt bearing his favorite color, similar to Mario's, whereas a female Mii is given a dress of her favorite color, resembling that of Princess Peach's. Mii Outfit A is unlocked by winning the 100cc Special Cup, whereas Mii Outfit B is unlocked once all 32 Expert Staff Ghosts have been unlocked in Time Trial. A Mii Outfit C was planned but scrapped from the game.

Miis are the most versatile playable characters in general, as their weight class is determined by their height and weight, they have voices that are determined by their gender and favorite color, and the color of their kart can differ, usually blue for male Miis and pink for female Miis.

There is a feature that whenever the player plays as a Mii, various sponsors and statues within several courses, such as Moonview Highway, replace a character's head with that of a Mii saved on the Wii console. Posters of Miis are already shown throughout Coconut Mall regardless of which character is being played as.

As background characters, Miis are often seen in the background, cheering racers along the way.

Mario Kart 7[]

Miis are an unlockable playable character in Mario Kart 7, with new voices that, like in Mario Kart Wii, depend on their gender and favorite color. Miis are unlocked by completing every Grand Prix cup on any of the engine classes.

Unlike Mario Kart Wii, Miis cannot have their outfit changed, and stay in a jumpsuit similar to the ones used by actual racers, and all have the same stat boosts.

Mario Kart 8[]

Miis are unlockable in Mario Kart 8, which does not give them any specific unlock criteria but instead always has them as the eighth character to be unlocked. Miis' voices differ from in previous Mario Kart series. Miis have a jumpsuit like in Mario Kart 7, but now wear a helmet alongside it. The costumes are remain unchangeable, although a Mii's kart size and voice is still determined by their height and weight. Using amiibo, it is possible to give Outfits to a Mii.

In the enhanced port Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Miis are instead available from the start.

In Mario Super Sluggers[]

Miis are playable characters. For teams, a Mii cannot be chosen as its captain, but up to eight Miis can be team players. Similar to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii, Miis have all their stats at 6/10 and do not have any voice acting.

A Mii's chemistry with other characters depends on their favorite color, and it corresponds to the color of a Mario character's body or clothing. For instance, Miis with red clothing have good chemistry with Mario whereas Miis with light green clothing have good chemistry with Yoshi. Miis of the opposite gender that share a favorite color also have good chemistry with one another.

All Miis are right-handed fielders, and while male Miis are also right-handed batters, female Miis are left-handed.

In Mario Sports Mix[]

Miis are among the playable characters, with each of them being the All-Around type. Miis have all of their stats set to 3/5, regardless of their height and width. Similar to Mario Kart Wii, a Mii's favorite color determines the color of their outfit, and the outfits for male and female Miis differ. Miis once again have voice acting, and there are some Miis spectating the matches.

In American television spots for Mario Sports Mix, two Miis named Mii-guel and Mii-chelle (a pun on the names Miguel and Michelle respectively) take the role of sports anchors, and show gameplay footage in the form of highlights segments, such as the Super Top 3 Show. One of the commercials has a segment named Mii Character Showcase, showing gameplay of Mii characters. Both Mii-guel and Mii-chelle also appear in the Mario Press Conference, where they interview Mario.

In Mario Tennis Open[]

Miis can be used as playable characters in Mario Tennis Open. In the Clubhouse, the player can buy new gear for their Mii, which will change its stats. Costumes can also be unlocked for them.

In New Super Mario Bros. U[]

The player can use their Mii character in New Super Mario Bros. U during both Challenge Mode and Boost Mode. They use the same voice clips from Mario Kart 7 and appear in costumes of Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. In Boost Mode and Challenge Mode, Miis appear in the background of levels, where they cheer the player on.

The game's precursor was a tech demo named New Super Mario Bros. Mii, which starred Miis as the only playable characters.
