The Mario Kart Channel was a feature in Mario Kart Wii that allowed access to special game modes related to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, such as tournaments, Wi-Fi ghost races, and Friend Code Registration. The channel could be downloaded to the Wii Menu and could be accessed without having a Mario Kart game disc in your Wii. However, a disc had to be inserted in order to participate in a race or tournament. The channel's functionality was ended on May 20, 2014 when the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service was discontinued in all regions.
