The Lap Counter shows how many laps the player needs out of the set number to finish the race. Most games have the usual three laps but in some games, they have more or less.

- Mario Kart: Double Dash!!: 3 laps (2 laps in Wario Colosseum, 7 laps in Baby Park, 1-9 laps in Vs. Mode)
- Mario Kart DS: 3 laps (5 laps in Baby Park)
- Mario Kart Wii: 3 laps
- Mario Kart 7: 3 (1 lap in Wuhu Loop, Maka Wuhu and Rainbow Road courses)
- Mario Kart 8: 3 laps (7 laps in Baby Park, 1 lap in Mount Wario, N64 Rainbow Road and Big Blue)
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 3 laps (7 laps in Baby Park, 1 lap in Mount Wario, N64 Rainbow Road and Big Blue)
