Klaptraps are small reptilians found in Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Land, and Donkey Kong 64 as commonly found enemies in the games. They scurry quickly along the ground, jaws clapping together just waiting to bite into a Kong. They usually have a small walk cycle where they patrol back and forth along it. One well-placed jump by either Donkey or Diddy will eliminate a Klaptrap.

They also appear in Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Party 7, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Power Tennis and Super Smash Bros. Brawl as cameos and small appearances.

Purple Klaptraps are found in very few levels but are almost more lethal than regular Klaptraps. When Donkey or Diddy Kong jumps up, the purple Klaptraps jump up too. The Kongs must time their jumps appropriately to land on them to take them out. Purple Klaptraps occur most numerously in the Loopy Lights level.

When Klaptraps are encountered in bonus levels, one hit does not take them out. When jumped on, they release bananas and their walk cycle speeds up every time they are hit. Exert great caution when jumping once they are walking very fast — it is very difficult to hit them. When the Kongs defeat the Klaptrap, they receive a prize such as an Animal Token or an Extra Life Balloon.
