Super Mario

Hiyoihoi SML sprite

Hiyoihoi is a boss who appears in Super Mario Land. He is encountered in the Easton Kingdom.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Hiyoihoi is an evolved Tokotoko with legs on his bottom side, a trait that his kind typically lacks. His arms have arm bands that have spikes, and glasses cover his eyes. His artwork gives him white gloves.

Behavior[]

Hiyoihoi attacks by throwing Ganchans at Mario.

In Super Mario Land[]

Hiyoihoi rules over the Easton Kingdom, and is fought in World 3-3. To defeat Hiyoihoi, Mario can either throw ten Superballs at him or by pressing the switch behind Hiyoihoi; utilizing the former strategy earns the player 5,000 points. Mario can avoid the Ganchans by simply jumping over them.

In the Super Mario Land manga[]

Hiyoihoi returns in the game's manga, where he is still the boss of the Easton Kingdom. Here, Hiyoihoi is depicted with a gatling gun from which he can shoot Bullet Bill-esque projectiles.

Prior to his battle, Hiyoihoi is disappointed in how his Tokotoko, Batadon, and Ganchan minions are so incompetent, becoming even angrier as Tatanga has less faith in him than in the Kumos and Suus in taking down Mario. When a humanized Suu named Suu-chan kills Hiyoihoi's Tokotoko and Batadon minions, Hiyoihoi takes out his gatling gun, trying to shoot everything in sight, but the Bullet Bill-esque projectiles only kill the Kumos. Suu-chan is saved from a Bullet Bill by Mario, who gains her trust and gratitude in the process. The duo face Hiyohoi on his floating base and cross a strange maze. He is later defeated when pelted by Superballs. Upon defeat, his base vanishes, and Suu-chan disappears as well with it, which Mario finds to his dismay.

Behind the Scenes[]

Name[]

Hiyoihoi is most likely named after "hyoi" (an onomatopoeia associated with picking something up) and "hoi" (an interjection for "heave-ho"), presumably alluding to his attack pattern.
