Goompa is a character who appears in Paper Mario.

History[]

Goompa is the grandfather of the Goomba Family. He is found outside of the Goomba House fixing the veranda. After the earthquake caused by Kammy Koopa, the veranda falls along with him. After attempting to go onto the veranda to find him, Mario falls to the ground as well.

Once in Jr. Troopa's Playground, Goompa explains to Mario that they must find the Hammer. Once Mario finds the Hammer and Goombaria's Peach doll, Goompa and Mario attempt to leave the forest. Interrupted by Jr. Troopa who claims that the land is his and wants a fight, Goompa helps Mario out by couching him on the sidelines during the fight.

If Mario chooses to do one of Koopa Koot's favors, he asks him to retrieve his Tape that Goompa has. A letter addressed to Goompa from Koopa Koot can also be given to him and Goompa mentions that he wasn't looking forward to reading something from Koopa Koot telling Mario he would read it later before giving him a Star Piece for his troubles.

Goompa himself stated that he used to be quite the fighter in his younger days. This is hinted at where he was the one that taught Mario the basis of fighting when the two were trying to get back to Goomba Village. There is even hints that Goompa taught The Master everything he knows and The Master is already recognized as an accomplished fighter even in his older age and is strong enough to be even more threatening than Bowser in battle.

Etymology[]

In a similar manner to how Goombario's name is a portmanteau of "Goomba" and "Mario," Goompa's name would appear to be a combination of "Goomba" and the name "Pa," another word for "grandfather."
