Mario MK7-2

Mario deploys his Super Glider in Mario Kart 7.

Gliders are a feature in the Mario Kart series. They first appear in Mario Kart 7 and later return in Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart Arcade GP DX and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. When players drive off of a Glider Ramp (a variant of Boost Pad) on the edge of a cliff (or something of the related sort), the Gliders will appear and will make the racers slowly descend in the air for a short time; this can be used to cross large gaps. Gliders vary in their design, with some looking like a hang glider and others looking like a kite.

Players can control which way the kart moves when gliding; left, right, dive (down), or even slowing down the descend a bit (which is up).

Whenever there is a gliding area, there is normally obstacles in the air to slow the player down. Sometimes (if the player hits an obstacle) the player will actually fall out of the air and land on the track below him or her, normally slowing the player down by a little. Getting struck by an item will cause the glider to break, although it can be used again if the racer in question uses another Glide Ramp.

If done correctly, gliding can be very helpful and can even speed the player up.

Gliding is introduced here, appearing in most courses.

Gliders return in this game, their function being the same as in Mario Kart 7. Gliding is featured in almost all courses, though some lack gliding, such as the third Donut Plains course from Super Mario Kart.
