A Fly Guy is a type of Shy Guy with a propeller on its head, allowing it to fly. Fly Guys made their first appearance in a Yoshi game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but made their Mario franchise debut shortly after in Super Mario 64. Like regular Shy Guys, Fly Guys have red as the standard color for their robes.
Fly Guys are often found carrying something, ranging from helpful items such as Red Coins to hazardous objects such as bombs. Fly Guys that carry a useful item may quickly fly offscreen a few seconds after appearing.
A Yoshi can defeat a Fly Guy by throwing an egg at it or by swallowing it. If a Yoshi eats a Fly Guy and spits it back out, it becomes a regular Shy Guy.
In Super Mario 64 DS, if Yoshi eats a Fly Guy, he can breathe fire and earn two coins. Fly Guys also appear in two of Mario's minigames, Bounce and Pounce and Bounce and Trounce, both in which the Marios can bounce on them.
Fly Guys do not appear in the main adventure mode, but in the Balloon Racing minigame as obstacles that Yoshi (or Yoshis if played in multiplayer) must avoid while making his way up to the Airship at the top.
Fly Guys appear in various minigames and boards throughout the Mario Party series, as early as in Mario Party. Fly Guys also appear in a handful of mini-games as well. In Mario Party 2's Mecha-Marathon, the characters must twist a wind-up key in order to initiate their mechanical Fly Guy in the race.
In Mario Party 5, a Fly Guy acts as the host of Duel Minigames, and appears whenever a character initiates a duel with another character.
Several Fly Guys also appear in various backgrounds of duel mini-games. In Blown Away, a Fly Guy can be seen circling around a tree with a Paratroopa in the background.
In Fly Guy's trophy scene, Wario and Waluigi try to steal his trophy. Waluigi tries to catch him using an oversized clipper, but Fly Guy spins into the duo, leaving Wario and Waluigi unsuccessful in their attempt to steal the trophy.
Fly Guys appear in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, where they carry timed bombs in battle. They may also carry Goombas and dropped them on Mario/Luigi's head.
Fly Guys reappear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, behaving similarly to the previous game. This time though, they are able to summon Goombas.
Only a few Fly Guys appear as enemies in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam during specific Paper Toad missions. They do not use Goombas for any of their attacks. Instead, they mostly rely on a bomb they toss back and forth to one another to attack.
Here, a Fly Guy makes his second playable appearance, after Mario Power Tennis, retaining its status as an unlockable character. Fly Guy can be unlocked by clearing the Star Tourney in Hard mode.
Fly Guys make their series debut in Paper Mario: The Origami King, where they have share the same stats with their ground-bound counterparts. Since they're airborne enemies, Mario can only jump on them and can't use Hammer (however, a Hurl Hammer can work just as fine, as with all other flying enemies).
