Super Mario Paper Mario Mario Party Mario & Luigi

Fire Bros. are enemies in the Mario franchise. They are a subspecies of Hammer Bros that throw Fireballs at Mario, Luigi and other players. These fireballs move very fast and are very hard to dodge. In earlier games, Fire Bros. spat their fireballs at the heroes however in later games, they started tossing them like their other comrades. Fire Bros. have appeared commonly in the recent platformers, appearing alongside their Hammer Bro and the Boomerang Bro comrades. Ice Bros, which were introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, are the elemental opposite of Fire Bros. as they instead shoot out Ice Balls.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Fire Bro

Fire Bros. first appear in the game, Super Mario Bros. 3 as rare enemies. In fact, only three appear in the entire game. Two appear in the Desert Land, after breaking a boulder in the desert with a hammer, while the third Fire Bro appears in the first Hand Trap level of Dark Land. Like Hammer Bros., Fire Bros. can be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, Hammer Suit, or a Starman. Defeating a Fire Bro earns the player 1,000 points. Defeating a Fire Bro in the two Desert Land levels rewards Mario or Luigi with a Warp Whistle. Whether defeated or not, it is mentioned by Princess Peach's letter as an unidentified thief of the whistle that escaped to the east of the desert.

On the map, their map icon was a Hammer Bro in the original NES version. In the Super Mario All-Stars remake, their map icon was adjusted to resemble an actual Fire Bro from the game. This adjustment remained intact for Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3; in that version, Fire Bros. also appear in a few World-e levels: Bowser's Last Stand, Koopaling Confusion, and Bowser's Airship 2.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. from New Super Mario Bros..

Fire Bros. reappear in New Super Mario Bros. as very rare enemies. Only a single pair is found in World 8-7, right after the checkpoint. They still use the same attacks they had in Super Mario Bros. 3. In this game, Fire Bros. throw their fireballs with the hand, just like Fire Mario, rather than spitting them, and the sound effect is the same as Fire Mario's. Fire Bros. can be defeated with either stomps, a brick smash from below, or the effects of a Fire Flower, Blue Shell, Mega Mushroom, or a Starman.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. on a platform above the Mario Crew.

Fire Bros. appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii having the same attacks from New Super Mario Bros. (tossing fireballs at their foes), although they appear more common than they do in the predecessor, they are even more common that regular Hammer Bros., they first appear in World 2-3 and later appear in World 3-4, World 6-6 and their last appearance is in World 9-7. Their fireballs are given a slightly different design and the sound effect has also been updated. Fire Bros. themselves however can be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower or Starman, they can also be frozen with the effects of an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit, Fire Bros. are often seen alongside Venus Fire Traps as well.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Fire Bro Secret Cavern

Two Fire Bros. in a cavern room.

Fire Bros. make yet another appearance in New Super Mario Bros. 2, although like New Super Mario Bros., they are very rare enemies, only appearing in World 6-3 in the base game, however, they also appear in the second course of the DLC stage Coin Challenge Pack B. In this game when they throw fireballs, they sound similar to that of fireballs being thrown by Gold Mario/Silver Luigi, Fire Bros. are also among the enemies to be affected by the Gold Rings, when affected, they become Gold Bros. and throw coins rather than fireballs, Fire Bros. themselves can be beaten with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Gold Flower, Mega Mushroom, Starman, or Invincibility Leaf.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Fire Bro Tower

A Fire Bro. Guard as seen in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Fire Bros. reappear in the Wii U game, New Super Mario Bros. U as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. In these games, they behave the same way they did in the past installments (tossing their fireballs), and are more commonly employed than any of their other brethren. Additionally, Fire Bros. have their own Enemy Course in Layer-Cake Desert in which either a lone Fire Bro or a trio of Fire Bros. guard a Starman, as well as making their first appearance as a fortress/castle enemy. Two of them are also found in the Challenge Mode, Fire, Bro!, in which the player must dodge their fireballs within fifteen seconds. They area also featured in the upgraded challenge, Seriously! Fire, Bro!, which has the same objective, but with four Fire Bros.

They appear in Fire Snake Cavern of Layer Cake Desert, Prickly Goombas! of Frosted Glacier, Light Blocks, Dark Tower of Rock-Candy Mines and Slide Lift Tower, Snaking Above Mist Valley and Ludwig's Clockwork Castle of Meringue Clouds. They are also seen in various other levels such as All Aboard!. This game also shows the first case of Fire Bros. being flipped, as proved in the level Fire Snake Cavern if the player stuns it with the light of a Glowing Baby Yoshi which leaves the, vulnerable to attacks. In Light Blocks, Dark Tower, Fire Bros. can ignite Bob-ombs with their fireballs. This made it a dangerous guardian of one of the Star Coins in the level, as Bob-ombs will repeatedly drop from a pipe in the cave ceiling, increasing the probability of the Fire Bros. blowing them up so be careful when going for the Star Coin. One way to prevent any danger due to their fireballs is to simply neutralize it with an iceball.

Just as before, Fire Bros. can be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower or Starman and can also be frozen with the effects of an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit, the Bubble Baby Yoshi can also destroy a Fire Bro. as well, the Baby Yoshis are too small to swallow a Fire Bro. on it's own however.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Fire Bro 3D

A Fire Bro. in Super Mario 3D World.

Fire Bros. appear in Super Mario 3D World, making their first appearance in a 3D Mario platformer game. These enemies are extremely common in this game, appearing in a multitude of levels. Their attack pattern is the same as that of Hammer Bros. and Boomerang Bros. in 3D Mario games, tossing two fireballs directly at him before jumping to another position. Their fireballs can travel through Clear Pipes, and can also be put out with projectiles. Some of them are found atop Goomba Towers and function as their commanders whose defeat clears remaining Goombas on a stack as well. Also, Fire Bros. appear in four hideouts throughout the game (located in World 4, World 5, World 6, and World Castle, that act as optional enemy battles which guard the Green Stars. In the game, Fire Bros' fireballs can defeat other enemies that come in contact with it, even one another. This is a great strategy in Fire Bro enemy blockades, in which Mario can get the Fire Bros. to face each other or get behind one another, and in that way, they kill their own brethren due to their own crossfire. Fire Bros. themselves can be destroyed with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Bell, Super Leaf, Boomerang Flower, Lucky Bell, Starman, Mega Mushroom, Invincibility Leaf, or Invincibility Bell.

In Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Cat Fire Bros. are also seen in the Bowser's Fury side of the game.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]

Fire Bros. appear once again in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, in this game, they behave as they did in Super Mario 3D World by tossing fireballs at Captain Toad or Toadette, the Toads must either dodge the incoming fireballs or take cover whenever the fireballs make their shots. Fire Bros. can be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Super Pickax. They only appear in Battle Tower Blitz and Beep Block Sky Plaza.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Fire Bros. make a return in Super Mario Odyssey, appearing as enemies commonly found in the Luncheon Kingdom, where they wear chef hats, and the Wooded Kingdom, where they wear their usual helmets. Mario must knock their helmets off before he can Capture them using Cappy. When Mario captures a Fire Bro, he is able to jump higher and throw fireballs almost as if he's donned a Fire Flower, this can be used to light unlit torches to open pathways, reveal Power Moons, and more. In this game, it is actually revealed that Fire Bros. have spiked hair underneath their helmets.

Super Mario Maker 2[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. preparing to toss his fireball from a ledge.

Fire Bros. make a reappearance in Super Mario Maker 2 as placeable enemies exclusive to the Super Mario 3D World style. They behave as they do in the mainline games added with their abilities from the 3D platformers. Fire Bros. fireballs still possess the ability to travel through the Clear Pipes, Fire Bros. can be beaten with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Bell, or Starman, additionally, the Fire Bros. also have a larger counterpart similar to the Sledge Bro. called the Heavy Fire Bro. Heavy Fire Bros. toss larger fireballs and can cause nasty ground pounds that can stun Mario if he's standing on the ground.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Paper Fire Bro

A Paper Fire Bro.

Only one Fire Bro appears in this game and his name is Flare who is a part of the Hamma, Bamma, & Flare team of the Glitz Pit in Glitzville. Like other Fire Bros in the series, Flare attacks by spitting fireballs at his opponents. The Fire Bro. also has a defense point requiring some quick strategy to defeat him.

Super Paper Mario[]

Fire Bro Card

The Fire Bro. Catch Card

Fire Bros. make an appearance in the third installment of the Paper Mario series, Super Paper Mario. They are encountered on the stairs in Castle Bleck and in also in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials, and act just as they did in Super Mario Bros. 3. Some Fire Bros. also have the unique ability to flip between dimensions. Any attack can be used to beat a Fire Bro.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Paper Fire Bro

A New Paper Fire Bro.

Fire Bros. make yet another appearance in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They are encountered in Rugged Road, Rumble Volcano and Bowser Jr.'s Flotilla. They have a bigger rarity than in New Super Mario Bros U, and Ice Bros. surprisingly appear to be semi-common enemies. Fire Bros. have a red shell and helmet, just like they do in other Paper Mario games, but the only change is they do not have arm bands. The color outline of the shell is white instead of yellow. Their only attack is to throw a fireball at Mario. They are immune to all fire-based stickers (i.e. Fire Flowers, Burnhammer stickers, and all Heat/Fire-based thing stickers); however, their main weakness is ice. When an Ice Flower, a Chillhammer sticker, or a Cold-based thing sticker is used against them, they will take double damage. When a cold-based Thing sticker (the Shaved Ice, Air Conditioner, or the Refrigerator/Fridge) is used in the first area of Rugged Road, the Fire Bros. turn into Ice Bros. Fire Bros. are mostly assisted by Shiny Paratroopas. On the field, Fire Bros., will frequently toss their fireballs at Mario, touching a Fire Bros. fireball outside battle will cause Mario to lose 3 HP, the fireballs are slightly easier to dodge than the iceballs from the Ice Bros., this is also the first Paper Mario game where Fire Bros. throw their fireballs rather than spit them.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[]

Paper Fire Bro

Fire Bros. return in Paper Mario: Color Splash keeping their appearance and behavior from the previous game. They can be found in Fortune Island, Redpepper Volcano, Redpepper Crater, and Black Bowser's Castle. A group of Fire Bros. in Redpepper Volcano are commanded by a blue leading Snifit. After they are defeated, another Snifit can be found training a Fire Bro to throw fireballs at the beginning of the level. The Fire Bros. attack by tossing their fireballs, they once again take critical damage from ice-based attacks but this time, take regular damage from fire-based attacks.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

Origami Fire Bro

An Origami Fire Bro.

Fire Bros. also appear in Paper Mario: The Origami King, with Origami Fire Bros. appearing as enemies whilst normal Fire Bros. are allies. They are first seen on the path toward the Fire Vellumental, and more appear in the Sea Tower. In battle, the Fire Bros. are formidable foes, they can once again throw fireballs as an attack named Fire Throw, or use a new move known as Super Bro Throw, this move can be dangerous. Super Bro Throw is shared by Hammer Bros, Boomerang Bros, and Ice Bros; they will lift another enemy and throw it at Mario for some heavy damage, which kills the thrown enemy.

In Mario Baseball series[]

Mario Superstar Baseball[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. plays Baseball.

Fire Bro makes his playable debut in Mario Superstar Baseball, as a color swap for Hammer Bro. He is one of the unlockable characters in the game.

The Fire Bro. also appears on Bowser's team in challenge mode alongside all the other Bros. He has slightly less speed than his counterparts, and uses your everyday average bat rather than the usual hammer or boomerang of his Hammer Bro. and Boomerang Bro. comrades. Starting with this game, the Fire Bro's appearance has been developed to be wearing a red helmet and a red shell also like his comrades. Oddly enough, even though the Fire Bro. uses a bat, his batting range remains the same as that of the Hammer Bro. and Boomerang Bro.

Mario Super Sluggers[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. playing Baseball again.

The Fire Bro. appears again in Mario Super Sluggers where he has the same bat as in Mario Superstar Baseball. He improved his fielding abilities, along with the best batting abilities among his counterparts. However, his pitching skills are worse; the worst when compared to the Hammer Bro. and Boomerang Bro.

In Mario Party 9[]

Fire Bro's

The Fire Bro. after his battle minigame, it looks like everybody tied today, phew!

Fire Bros. appear in Mario Party 9, in this game, whenever players land on a Battle Space, a Fire Bro. may have a chance of showing up instead of the usual Hammer Bro. (however the Fire Bro. is much more rare). Unlike the Hammer Bro. which takes away three Mini Stars from each player and divides them amongst the players depending on their place in the minigame, after the minigame is over, he will take 10 Mini Stars from the player who came in last (by tossing a fireball at him/her) and divide them amongst the other players). This results in him to give the +2 Mini Starsd to 3rd place, +3 Mini Stars to 2nd place and +5 Mini Stars to 1st place, in a three-player game, first place gets +7 Mini Stars while second place gets +2, if two players tie for last, the Fire Bro. will take 5 Mini Stars from both players and provide them to the winner(s). If every player ties for first or last, nobody loses or gains any Mini Stars.

Like the Hammer Bro, the Fire Bro floats on a platform however unlike the Hammer Bro, the Fire Bro's platform is red rather than green.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro.

Fire Bros. appear in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, they debuted in Neo Bowser Castle. They throw fireballs at Mario and Luigi to make contact for a battle. During the battle, Fire Bros., are rather tough customers, they can do one of two things with their fireballs, they can rapidly chuck fireballs with an occasional -5 coins, to avoid fireballs, the bros. should jump. The Fire Bros. can even throw a large fireball into the sky for it to shower on the targeted Brother on the next attack turn of the thrower or at the end of the battle, to avoid them, Mario or Luigi should smash it with the hammer, this attack can be dangerous as the Bros. can sometimes forget it's coming therefore it might come as a surprise. All the fire Bros. attacks can cause Burn or Char.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. in battle.

Fire Bros make a reappearance in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam as enemies along with the Paper Fire Bros. They are first found during Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario's second visit to Twinsy Tropics Dungeon. After Crinkle Goomba betrays the heroes and gives the Red Medallion to two Fire Bros., the trio must find out which Fire Bro. has the Medallion by fighting them and receiving hints from them upon defeat. In battle, the Fire Bros. attack virtually identically to how they did in the previous game, they can attack by standing on either side of one of the brothers and throwing fireballs at him. This must be dodged by jumping over them, causing the Fire Bro. on the other side to take damage from the fireball. They also occasionally throw Mushrooms over the brother. Fire Bros. can also attack by throwing fireballs into the air, occasionally jumping when throwing them. After the trio's next turn, the fireballs come back down, with the fireballs that were thrown while the Fire Bro. was jumping missing.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro's data in Bowser Jr.'s Journey.

Fire Bros. are back in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, here, they appear as enemies and recruitable allies in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey side story. They are strong against plants, such as Fire Stalking Piranha Plants, Sockops, Borps, Treevils, and Beehosses. However, they are weak against Ice Bros. and Parabones. Fire Bros. are really useful when going up against flying enemies, this combined with their powerful fire attacks makes it an especially good idea to deploy them when going up against these types of foes.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]

Fire Bro

Several Fire Bros. in battle.

Fire Bros. return in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. In this game, they appear as enemies and recruitable allies found in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser. They are classed as ranged troopers, and attack by throwing fireballs at enemies. Fire Bros. are strong against Pokeys and Fuzzbushes, though they are weak against Ice Bros. Their fire-based attacks are relatively powerful so it is generally a good idea to deploy heaps of Fire Bros. when going up against many flying troops.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Cup.

In Mario Tennis Aces[]

Fire Bros. make an appearance in Mario Tennis Aces, in this game, they can be seen in the adventure mode level Sure Shot Challenge, where two of them are seen throwing tennis balls along with a Hammer Bro. They are also found in the level at Castle Gates, Defeat Bowser's Minions!, where they are the second group of enemies that must be fought. They attack by throwing fireballs, and can be defeated by deflecting the fireballs back at them. Some fireballs are purple, and they must be blocked to knock them back at the Fire Bro., causing it to bounce back as a regular fireball.

Crossover appearances[]

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[]

Fire Bro

A Fire Bro. in battle.

Fire Bros. make a return in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition where they appear as enemies. They're Fire attribute characters, and their skill changes all Wood Orbs into Fire Orbs, while their Awoken Skill increases the amount of HP that gets restored whenever Heart Orbs are cleared.

When fought as enemies, a Fire Bro. can be bothersome as it always delivers a first strike attack on you, and it can also deliver frenzied blow attacks which deal more damage than normal so be careful.

A player can unlock a Fire Bro. to use as an ally in battle by using five Fire Flowers on a Hammer Bro.
