Wario (ワリオ,Wario?, Wario) is an anti-hero character in the Mario franchise designed as both the evil doppleganger and rival of Mario, however, he is younger than Mario and older than Luigi. Shortly after his debut in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario went on to become the main protagonist of his own franchise of the same name.
Although Wario was introduced as the main antagonist in his debut appearance, he developed into more of an anti-hero, especially with his first starring role in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Wario has still sometimes appeared as a central antagonist, such as in Mario & Wario and Wario's Woods. Wario's adventures are always mainly about collecting treasure or getting revenge and reclaim it from thieves who take it from him. Over the years he has faced many foes, including Captain Syrup, Mad Scienstein, Rudy the Clown, Black Jewel, and Terrormisu. Wario has three of his own iconic vehicles introduced in his franchise: the Wario Car from the Wario Land series, his own Bulldog plane, and the Wario Bike from the WarioWare series. In some games, Wario is shown to have his own castle.
Wario tends to speak more than his nemeses Mario and Luigi do. In the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy games, Wario does not have any voice acting, but he speaks through in-game text to express himself. During these games, he also tends to speak in slang, such as dropping his "g"'s and also using shortened words when describing Toad (such as "'Shroom" instead of "Mushroom"). He also speaks in various comic strips made during that time. Wario provides miscellaneous quotes as hints in the manual of the first Wario Land and narrates various parts in that of Wario Land II, and the manuals of Wario Land 4, Wario World, and Wario Land: Shake It! are primarily written with him as the narrator. He does, however, briefly have a synthesized chuckle sound effect in Super Mario Land 2, and also has a growling sound effect immediately before fighting him.
In Mario Kart 64, Wario receives voice acting for the first time, provided by Thomas Spindler and Charles Martinet in the Japanese and overseas versions respectively. Spindler also voiced Wario for Mario Party and Mario Party 2, but Martinet has voiced him in all other games in which he has received voice acting since then. Martinet portrays Wario with a deep, gruff voice to give him a "tough" demeanor, whereas Mario and Luigi are given higher-pitched, softer voices. Wario speaks with a strong Italian accent, but there are several notable differences between his speech and that of Mario and Luigi. For example, Wario is less likely to refer to himself in the third person, as evidenced by quotes like "I lost! To a buncha losers!". Additionally, Wario adding "-a" after contractions is much less common, such as when he says "It should've been called Wario Golf! You're gonna love it!" after the intro for the Nintendo 64 game Mario Golf. However, there are still some instances where this is not the case, such as Mario Kart Wii, where he says "It's-a me, Wario!" and "I'm-a gonna win!".
Wario frequently speaks in full sentences; for example, he is heard saying "What, are you my caddy?" and "What is this dump?!" in the opening cutscenes of Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour and Mario Power Tennis, respectively, "Have a rotten day!" to his enemies in Wario World, and "Ha ha! Wario wins! Take that, losers!" in Mario Kart Wii. In the Super Smash Bros. series, the inverse occurs: Wario's speech in these games primarily consists of grunts and yells, with only one meaningful word ("Yes!"). In the WarioWare series, Wario often speaks in full sentences that are conveyed by subtitles; WarioWare Gold in particular gives Wario full voice acting for all of these lines. In some Japanese commercials, Wario was voiced by Chikao Otsuka.
Physical description[]
According to the Wario World instruction manual, Wario weighs 308 pounds (140 kilograms), although he claims that this is just because of his clothes. He has broad, muscular arms, a large belly, and his excess fat overlaps the openings of his overalls; it is shown his arms and legs are pure muscle meaning the rest of his fat must be stored elsewhere.
His skin ranges from a fair to tan complexion. His nose is pink, large, slightly pointed down, and he has large nostrils. Wario's mouth is square-rectangle-shaped, as is his head, with blocky teeth and a fixed grin. He also has a round, thick, cleft chin. He has round black-eyes, which were initially wonky, shaped by his cheeks and arched brows. They are outlined with a light blue, baggy, ring similar to Waluigi's. He has very constricted pupils and his iris is of a very dark shade. In Wario's Woods, while Wario now has slanted eyes and thick eyebrows, he is depicted with round cartoonish eyes and thin eyebrows.
Wario is actually not as short as he appears. He appears much wider than others and he is noticeably taller than Mario. In fact, Wario is as tall as Luigi regardless of his stout appearance, but he is still shorter than others such as Peach and Waluigi. His athletic abilities tend to make him a powerhouse character, as is expected with his body type.
Wario has light brown hair, the same color as Waluigi's. His hairstyle is similar to that of Waluigi's, having small flips at the back, swooped up bangs, and styled sideburns. He also has a black, large, zigzag-shaped mustache.
Within the Super Smash Bros. series, Wario's appearance changes. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, where Wario appeared as a Trophy, his undershirt was long-sleeved, while his skin had a tan complexion, reflecting his then-most recent appearances in games such as Mario Party 3. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where Wario debuts as a playable character, his design is updated to match his contemporary appearances, though with a realistic look. Wario's undershirt in his "classic" costumes is now short-sleeved, though his overalls and hair receive realistic details; his biker outfit features the aforementioned details in his hair and shoes, though his denim jacket receives more pronounced textures. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Wario's design is updated to be vibrant and cartoonish, while his physique is more muscular, resulting in him appearing more in line with his recent appearances in games such as Mario Kart 8. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Wario receives a slightly subdued color scheme, while his hair and clothing receive simple detailing.
Occupations[]
Wario is often depicted as an adventurer and thief, and there have been many hints towards his other jobs and hobbies. One of the most consistent occupations is his ownership of a microgame production company, WarioWare, Inc., in the WarioWare series.
The commercials for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 show Wario to be a hypnotist, although he only puts it to use in the former game.
Wario Land II seems to depict Wario as a farmer. He keeps several chickens outside his castle, including his notable "beloved pet" hen. It is unknown if Wario uses these chickens for agricultural purposes, though. He is also seen doing some farm work in Game & Watch Gallery 4 in the cutscene for Fire Attack. On a similar note, his third vehicle in Mario Kart DS, Dragonfly, is a tractor.
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, one of the buildings in Mushroom City is titled Wario Pharmacy, suggesting that he works, or at least owns, the location.
Personality traits[]
Wario has several negative characteristics in general, among them laziness, ruthlessness and gluttony, unlike Mario, who is portrayed as kind and heroic. Wario's most prominent trait is his greed, as he is often portrayed as being unscrupulous when opportunities arise to gain wealth, whether they are good or bad. In his adventures, mainly the Wario Land series, Wario has unintentionally helped others along the way, as his real goal is collecting treasure and wealth. Wario falls easily susceptible to bribery. Wario tends to have schemes to get rich quickly, although these often backfire on him. In his Super Mario series debut in Super Mario 64 DS, Wario is noticeably not motivated by greed when teaming up with Yoshi, Mario, and Luigi to fight Bowser, and is also a silent protagonist alongside them, a trait generally held by Mario. Wario started out as more of an evil character. In a commercial for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario attempts to hypnotize the viewers into serving him. He continues on with his evil streak in Wario's Woods and Mario and Wario, while also playing an anti-hero role in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Later games feature him almost exclusively in the anti-hero role, and he seems to have retired as Mario's enemy, even though he does say he is still his nemesis. Wario is not completely evil, but his greed can motivate him to do evil things. Wario is also a very aggressive and ruthless brute, so he will turn to violence to get what he desires. He is shown to be very hot-tempered and temperamental as well. Despite lacking common sense, Wario is also very cunning and intelligent. He has tricked Mario on several occasions and has been shown to be able to fly a plane. He has even built a dimensional teleporter in a matter of seconds. Wario is also shown to be a very poor sport, though the Mario Party games surprisingly portray him as playing fair. He will brag if he wins and he is a very sore loser. He might have a crush on Princess Peach, as well as his friend named Mona, who also likes him. Wario likes garlic and can eat it to become Wario Man.
Wario has poor hygiene, an example of which is shown from talking to one of the Toads as Wario in Super Mario 64 DS. Wario is inordinately fond of garlic, often resulting in foul-smelling breath. Wario has also been associated with flatulence, especially since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in which one of his special moves is Wario Waft, allowing Wario to shoot upward into the air by farting.
Despite his hatred of working for free, Wario partakes in vigorous exercise in his spare time, compensating for the fact that he eats a lot of junk food. Wario is known to be a shrewd businessman, master airplane pilot, and talented hypnotist. He has a strong aversion towards sand.
In his early appearances, Wario is never shown to have any friends, but since the WarioWare series, he appears to have a great many of them, such as Jimmy T. and Mona, the latter of whom he appears to have special feelings for. In Mario Party 6, Wario and Toadette's team name is Secret Friends, suggesting that they are friends to a certain degree.
Wario's fierce competitiveness is fueled by an intense jealousy of Mario. In a Nintendo Power comic, Wario is shown to dislike Mario because when they were both younger, Mario, playful and vaguely oblivious, inadvertently bullied Wario. Here, Wario was stuck picking Piranha Plants that would attack him while Mario picked turnips. Another instance is shown where Wario gettings by Thwomps while attempting to flatten coins with Mario, and whenever they played cowboys, Wario almost always had to be the rustler that Mario, as the sheriff, had to arrest. In the one time Wario got to be the sheriff, Mario would make fun of Wario.
Despite having a close association to Wario in the Mario franchise, Waluigi has not yet made any major appearance in the Wario games.
Biography[]
Mario and Wario[]
Wario was driven by a lifestyle of jealousy over Mario and tried multiple times to take over Mario Land but was bested every time. Mario saved Sarasaland and Princess Daisy from Tatanga, while Wario takes over Mario's Castle. After Mario came back, he was forced to fight his way through the brainwashed citizens and obtain the Golden Coins to reclaim his castle. Once he reclaims his Golden Coins, Mario enters the castle and confronts Wario. Wario battles Mario through three stages, first by fighting by himself, the second by eating a carrot to become Bunny Wario, and third by using a Fire Flower to become Fire Wario. But Mario manages to best Wario and defeat him, reducing him to Tiny Wario. He punts a shoe at Mario before fleeing from the castle balcony.
Conquering Kitchen Island[]
Despite his loss of taking Mario's castle, he resiliently plotted to conquer Kitchen Island without realizing how tough the Brown Sugar Pirates were. Wario attempts to conquer the castle, but Captain Syrup prevented him. However, Wario conquered the castle with Captain Syrup surrendering her castle as it belonged to Wario receiving his treasures. Wario enjoyed having the statue of Princess Peach until Mario took it away from him. He got his wish from the genie and received the home with all of his Money Bags.
Captain Syrup's revenge[]
Captain Syrup and the Black Sugar Gang intrudes Wario's Castle and stole his treasures while he was exhausted from treasure-hunting. Wario furiously starts his quest to retrieve his stolen treasures. Upon Captain Syrup's defeat, he took back his treasures.
The Mysterious Music Box[]
Wario enjoyed riding on his plane in the skies. However, his plane sputtered as he crashed-landed into the woods. Spending his afternoon, he muttered for his misfortune. He found a cave and walked inside, he noticed a Music Box perching on the stand. Touching it, he was teleported inside it. Wario found a mysterious figure who said was the god of the world inside the music box. It said that someone took its power and controlled the world. The mysterious figure told Wario to find the five Music Boxes and restore its power; then he will reward him his treasures.
After retrieving the Music Boxes, Wario came to the hidden figure and did what he was told. Suddenly, it turned out to be Rudy the Clown who had fooled him and battles against Wario. Wario defeated Rudy who had put a curse upon the inhabitants that Wario had encountered, planning to take over the music box's world including the outer world. Wario foiled his plan as he was defeated thus the cursed inhabitants had been transformed back to normal. An old man came to Wario, told him that the people also managed to sell Rudy, but also cursed them with his last power. As a reward for Wario's rescue, the old man brought him back to his world and gave Wario's treasures.
The Golden Pyramid[]
Wario was reading a newspaper article on a discovered legendary Golden Pyramid where Princess Shokora ruled but was cursed in her sleep by the Golden Diva. Hearing this, Wario was thinking about money forgetting to nap in the middle of the morning. Wario rode on his car to the pyramid. Arriving at the pyramid, Wario found the black cat that leads him deeper into the hole.
Wario came through five passages approaching the Golden Diva. Golden Diva had trapped the black cat inside herself and proceeded to fight Wario. Golden Diva had vanished and Wario retrieved the treasure, including the pyramid sinking. Wario and the black cat escaped from the pyramid and watched the pyramid sink. The five treasures of Golden Diva changed the black cat back to Princess Shokora. She thanked Wario and was peacefully taken with the angels. Wario brought his treasure to the car and returned home.
During Wario Land: Shake It!, it is discovered that within an Ancient Globe on exhibition at a museum, there is another world called the Shake Dimension. The locale's peace is shattered by the Shake King, who imprisons Queen Merelda and her loyal subjects (called Merfles), and steals the legendary Bottomless Coin Sack, which spits out coins whenever it is shaken.
Captain Syrup observes the Shake Dimension's crisis from the outside world. Setting her sights on the legendary treasure, but with no desire of doing the dirty work herself, she steals the Ancient Globe and sends it to Wario. True to form, Wario prepares to raid the beleaguered kingdom when a Merfle escapes to the outside world in hopes of finding help. When Wario hears of the Bottomless Coin Sack, he sets out to defeat the Shake King and thereby acquire that legendary treasure. However, as soon as he returns victorious from the Shake Dimension, Captain Syrup appears and steals the Bottomless Coin Sack from the bewildered Wario much to his outrage.
Wario has also been seen in the South Park Imaginationland trilogy as one of the many villains fighting against the heroes. However, Wario has a "V" instead of a "W" on his hat and gloves.
Trivia[]
Mario Kart 7 marks Wario's first and only time being an unlockable character in the Mario Kart series.
It has been speculated that Wario and Waluigi are brothers. In the official guide to Mario Party 5, it confirms that Wario and Waluigi are not brothers. Their team name is even called the "Wicked Bros." rather than the "Wario Bros." however the official guide for Mario Kart Wii states that they are brothers.
It has been speculated that Wario was just simply Mario but with the W replacing the M. However, the name's origin is based on the Japanese word "warui" (which means "bad"); Wario is supposed to be a bad version of Mario.
Wario is the only character in the Super Smash Bros. series to go from being a starter character in one game into being an unlockable character in the next game.
According to Wario World, Wario's weight is 308 lbs.
He was playable in New Super Mario Bros. where he was Player 3 in the minigame mode however this isn't apart of the main game.
In the Super Mario Adventures comics, it is revealed why Wario was 10 feet tall in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and 3 feet tall in the rest of the games. Apparently, Wario somehow had helium in his suit and when Mario pulled a cork from the side of Wario, the suit deflated, and he returned to normal size.
In the promotional Mario Sports Mix Press Conference , Mario stated that it was difficult to convince Wario into participating. Once Mario mentioned the four sports to him, Wario finally decided to take part.
In many pieces of official media, it is explained that Mario and Wario are cousins, including a recent Nintendo pamphlet talking about Wario.
According to the manual of Wario World, Wario has 20/70 eyesight, 80+ psi grip, weighs 308 pounds, has size 11 feet, his brain does not have many wrinkles, has no cavities, can do over 100 push-ups, can hold 22 gallons in his stomach, and can hold 1.1 gallons in his bladder.
