Prankster Comets are comets that sometimes circles galaxies in the Super Mario Galaxy series. They first appear in Super Mario Galaxy and make a reappearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

In the games[]

In Super Mario Galaxy, Prankster Comets had different colours and tail designs depending on their effects. If Mario goes to a galaxy being circled by a Prankster Comet, he will have to do a hard challenge. A Prankster Comet can be moved around by feeding twenty Star Bits to a special Luma.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Prankster Comets need to be summoned by a Comet Medal.

Types[]

Speedy Comet[]

Main article: Speedy Comet

In a Speedy Comet challenge, Mario must get the Power Star before the time runs out. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Speedy Comets reappear but there are clocks that add ten more seconds and less time to begin with. Speedy Comets are red with two spiral wispy tails surrounding a straight, orange, fiery tail in the first game, but their appearance is changed to the generic design in Galaxy 2. Galaxies infected with a Speedy Comet have red hazes in the first game when Mario partakes the challenge.

Cosmic Comet[]

Main article: Cosmic Comet

In a Cosmic Comet challenge, Mario or Luigi must race their cosmic counterparts to the Power Star. Cosmic Luigi takes more of the shortcuts than Cosmic Mario does. Cosmic Comets do not appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2; their design in the original Super Mario Galaxy is a blue comet with a wispy tail, and Galaxies with a Cosmic Comet have blue hazes when Mario partakes the challenge.

Daredevil Comet[]

Main article: Daredevil Comet

In a Daredevil Comet challenge, Mario has a maximum of one health point, and will usually fight a boss. Daredevil Comets reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Their design in the original game takes the form of a white comet with a fiery tail and a bright glow, and a Galaxy with a Daredevil Comet has a black haze in the level itself.

Fast Foe Comet[]

Main article: Fast Foe Comet

In a Fast Foe Comet challenge, all of the enemies move faster than normal. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, there are similar comets called Double Time Prankster Comets, where certain elements of the world switch faster. Fast Foe Comets are yellow with faint greenish-yellow glows, and a Galaxy under their influence has a golden haze in the level itself.

Purple Comet[]

Main article: Purple Comet

In a Purple Comet challenge, Mario must collect 100 Purple Coins. There is sometimes a time limit. Purple comets have a purple tail with faint magenta glows, and any Galaxy under their influence has a purple haze during the challenge. They only appear after beating Bowser's Galaxy Reactor in Super Mario Galaxy. Purple Comets reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Clone Comet[]

Main article: Clone Comet

In a Clone Comet challenge, Mario must attempt to complete a designated task whilst being followed by many Cosmic Clones. There can sometimes be a time limit added. These comets only appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Their design is the generic Prankster Comet design.

Romp Comet[]

Main article: Romp Comet

In a Romp Comet challenge, Mario must attempt to wipe out every enemy from a designated area using either an Item, or a Star. This must be completed within the time given. If Mario fails to complete this in time, he will have to restart. Once he has wiped out all the enemies, he is allowed to collect the Power Star. These comets only appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Their design has the standard Prankster Comet design.

Double Time Comet[]

Main article: Double Time Comet

In a Double Time Comet challenge, Mario must attempt to complete either a full level or a portion of a level whilst the moving portions (apart from most enemies with the exception of Thwomps) move faster than normal. There is not usually a time given for this comet. These comets, though similar to Fast Foe Comets, only appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Their appearance uses the basic Prankster Comet design.

Green Comet[]

Green Comet

Green Comets are a fundamental part of Super Mario Galaxy 2, as half the stars to collect are derived from the Green Comet. Green Comets add two or three Green Stars to a galaxy that didn't appear before. These are not exactly new missions, more of a hide and seek game with the star. These comets appear in every galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2 apart from Grandmaster Galaxy. These comets appear all at once, and can only be unlocked once Mario has collected the previous 120 Power Stars. These comets only appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Their design is unknown, but the missions they lead to have green stars with a comet tail.
