Iggy Koopa, or simply just Iggy, is the middle child of the seven Koopalings, Bowser's offspring in older games retained through re-releases,[1][2][3][4] and Bowser's minions in newer games. He and the other Koopalings all first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
His shell and hair color vary. He wears glasses and has hair similar to Larry's and Lemmy's. His two main characteristics are his glasses and light green hair (originally pink, light blue, and yellow). In later appearances, he is shown to be the thinnest of the Koopalings.
The artwork for Super Mario Bros. 3 portrayed Iggy with Blue-ringed eyes, but some later depictions (including the artwork of Super Mario World) show him with eyes that are swirls instead, possibly to indicate his eccentric personality (this is a common anime/manga convention for eccentrics). Incidentally, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga used the original eye design. Iggy is responsible for inventing the robots that the Koopalings use in Yoshi's Safari. His skills as an inventor are also on display in the Nintendo Adventure Books based on the games.[5][6] Additionally, in the PC edition of Mario is Missing, Iggy was shown to speak completely in rhyme. Back at Super Mario World, Iggy used to have white hair and a blue shell. The last game that he had a rainbow mohawk was in Mario is Missing! but he now has green, tree-like hair.
Personality[]
Iggy is also easily excited and prone to bouts of hyperactivity, fooling around and annoying everyone in his vicinity. Iggy is childish, frivolous, and quite possibly insane. He is often known to cackle maniacally, even if there's nothing going on and preferring to joke around, being a fun-loving prankster But he is the second smartest and he is Lemmy's best brother.
Etymology[]
Iggy is named after Iggy Pop, a famous American punk rock singer and leader of the proto-punk band The Stooges.

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Iggy is the fourth boss, and he is fought in Giant Land. In his sprite, Iggy has white hair and a blue shell. Iggy jumps around the room shooting blasts from his magic wand. Just as with the other Koopalings, Mario or Luigi can defeat Iggy by jumping on him three times in total.
Super Mario World[]

Iggy is the first boss in Super Mario World, and is fought in Iggy's Castle at the end of the first world, Yoshi's Island. Iggy's only attack consists of throwing fireballs. To defeat Iggy, Mario or Luigi must knock him into the lava pit by either jumping on his head or by throwing fireballs at him as Fire Mario or Fire Luigi, respectively.
Super Mario Sunshine[]
Iggy makes a small cameo appearance during a cutscene on Delfino Airstrip. Here, when Mario is scanned by FLUDD as they meet one another, a small clip of Iggy being fought in Super Mario World is shown on the bottom-left corner for about one second.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Mario vs. Iggy Koopa
Iggy is the boss of World 5, where he is fought in its tower then in its castle.
In World 5-Tower, when the battle starts, Iggy gasps in sarcastic terror and spanks himself, his signature taunt. He then shoots green fireballs and bounces around on three moving platforms. To defeat Iggy, the player's character must stomp on him three times.
In World 5-Castle, Iggy ride in a Chain Chomp vehicle pulled by a Chain Chomp made giant by Kamek's magic. Mario has to prevent getting hit by the Chomp and Iggy's green fireballs. Iggy can again be defeated by jumping on him three times.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Iggy's appears in his battle riding another Chain Chomp vehicle (the Chomp remains normal-sized) in World 2 of New Super Mario Bros. 2. He also appears in the Castles of Worlds 6 and 9, along with the rest of the Koopalings, in their giant Clown Car.
New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
Iggy, instead of spanking himself, will make lava rise underneath him and Mario. He will slide into pipes and come out of others, sometimes walking on the ceiling. His magic consists of not only green magic flames but also red ones with skull patterns. When the red flames hit the lava, they spawn Magmaarghs.
Super Mario Maker 2[]

Iggy is a placeable enemy in Super Mario Maker 2 as of version 3.0.0. Iggy can run forward and backward. He has to be stomped on three times like other Koopalings, if the player gives him wings, he will act in the same way as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
In Yoshi's Safari[]
Iggy is the sixth boss, and he is encountered at the Grand Bridge. He rides a giant Mecha-Blooper. The first weak spots are the tentacles on top. After you destroy them, the Mecha-Blooper dives. You must destroy the tentacles when they come out of the water. Once the Mecha-Blooper is destroyed, Iggy is revealed, clinging to a piece of debris floating in the ocean as he holds up a white flag to symbolize his defeat. When Iggy is defeated, he relinquishes the Pearl Gem.
In Hotel Mario[]
Iggy is the only Koopaling to not have his own hotel. Instead, Iggy is seen at Bowser's Seizures Palace Hotel, in Bowser's BBQ Room, right before the fight against Bowser himself. Iggy wears a big Bowser mask, as to fool or trick Mario. He spits fireballs and can jump between floors. Iggy can also summon lightnings to strike Mario. After being defeated, Bowser arrives, and the final fight ensues.
In the Mario & Luigi series[]
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga/Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]
Iggy is the first boss of Bowser's Castle. Upon reaching his room, he spins rapidly around Mario and Luigi, causing the two brothers to become dizzy. The player must figure out the mixed-up directions the Bros move in to dodge fire racing around on the ground, otherwise they must start over. At the end is Iggy, who will fight them if they reach him. He can spit fireballs that can be countered with the Hammer. He also has a rapid spin attack; if he is not hammered enough or in time, he will damage the Bros.
In Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser[]
Iggy appears in Minion Quest as an obtainable trooper. He is a Ranged-type, and his Special Skill is Power Up, which increases his allies' POW.
In Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]
Iggy reappears as a secondary protagonist with the other Koopalings. His type is changed to Flying as he rides in a Clown Car similar to Bowser Jr.'s Flying form or his Super Smash Bros. appearance.
In the Mario Kart series[]
Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Iggy Koopa appeared as a playable racer along with his siblings. This is the first game in which he is playable.
Mario Kart Tour[]
Iggy is a playable character in Mario Kart Tour. He must be unlockable and is a normal character. He was added in the Tokyo Tour along with the rest of the Koopalings.

Hop Koopa in the cartoons
In the cartoons, he was named Hop Koopa (Lemmy Koopa, his brother, was named Hip, a play on the urban music genre hip hop) and was often seen with his brother Hip. The two of them shared most of their sentences (à la Donald Duck’s nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie) and were usually seen pulling pranks. In the cartoons, Hip and Hop are twins, as well as the youngest of the Koopalings. Though, the cartoons are not part of the series canon. Hop’s overbite and non-swirling eyes are the only significant ways in which he differs from Lemmy. In Super Mario World, his hair was matched by the artwork of him in-game. They were both voiced by Tara Strong.
Super Mario Bros. (film)[]
In the Super Mario Bros. (film), one of King Koopa’s cousins is named Iggy.[7]

Trivia[]
- Iggy was named after James Newell Osterberg Jr., better known by his stage name, Iggy Pop, who is the lead singer for the American rock band, the Stooges.[8]
- Out of all the Koopalings in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Iggy has changed the most from the old games, as he is now taller, thinner, and his hair color has changed from rainbow to solid green and is styled somewhat like the base of a flower. His shell is still green like before, though it is more of a lighter shade and is the same color as his new hair-do.
- He and Roy are the only Koopalings with glasses.
