Dry Bones are skeletal versions of Koopa Troopas that are mainly found in towers and castles. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, and have since become a staple in Mario spin-off games; more skeletal Koopas have since appeared in the Mario franchise, such as Bony Beetle and Dry Bowser. Dry Bones is commonly made a lightweight character in some spinoff games, and is sometimes accompanied by Boo. The emblem used by Dry Bones in some appearances is based on a profile of their head. They are voiced by Toru Asakawa.

Profile[]

Powers and abilities[]

Although Dry Bones, being made of skeleton, are prone to having their bodies collapse, they are capable of rebuilding it after taking damage, which occurs a few seconds after being stomped on. A Dry Bones can be permanently defeated by either touching it while invincible or by throwing a Koopa Shell at it. As of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a Dry Bones can be temporarily frozen into an ice block from an Ice Ball of Ice Mario's or Penguin Mario's and defeated by throwing it at either a wall or into the lava.

Dry Bones are invulnerable to Fireballs in the Super Mario series. Despite this, they are vulnerable to this in Hotel Mario, and in the Paper Mario series, Dry Bones are very susceptible to fire-based attacks, which are super-effective against them.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Dry Bones Classic

Dry Bones first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3. In this game, they do nothing much. They only walk in one direction until the path ends, then they move in the other direction. The player can jump on them, but they will get up after a few seconds. They can be defeated from either a Starman or the rare Hammer Suit. Either defeating or stomping on a Dry Bones earns the player 100 points. Dry Bones appear most prominently in the multiple Fortresses of the game, where they often accompany Boos and Thwomps. The first level that they appear in is World 1-Fortress. Super Mario Bros. 3 is also the only appearance of Dry Bones on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

In the remake Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, Dry Bones can also be defeated by the Cape Feather. This item, originally from Super Mario World, can only be obtained by scanning the "Cape" card with the e-Reader.

Super Mario World[]

Dry Bones Castle Guard SNES

Mario stomps on a Dry Bones before entering the Boss Door.

Dry Bones act relatively the same as in Super Mario Bros. 3, but there is now another variant of Dry Bones that can throw bones, which would become an occasional trait in later appearances. They can be defeated by Cape Feather or the Starman. They also turn around at ledges, similar to Red Koopa Troopas, instead of just falling, a trait that Dry Bones retain in the later New Super Mario Bros. games.

The Dry Bones of Dinosaur Land appear somewhat different from the Super Mario Bros. 3 versions of them—most notably, they walk on two feet for the first time, they have pink shoes (red in the artwork) in place of the light blue shoes seen in later games, and are larger relative to Mario. They also appear larger than regular Koopa Troopas, despite being skeletal versions of them. Stomping a Dry Bones earns the player 200 points. Their fish variant, Fish Bones, also make their first appearance in this game.

Super Princess Peach[]

Dry Bones Spooky Ribs

Peach sees a Dry Bones in Super Princess Peach.

Dry Bones are enemies encountered in Shriek Mansion and Bowser's Villa. They are able to throw bones at Princess Peach, and the bones can be blocked by a swipe from Perry. If a Dry Bones itself is hit or jumped on, it crumbles and revives itself in about three seconds, which is relatively fast compared to previous games. Dry Bones can be defeated permanently with the Joy Vibe's cyclone or the Rage vibe. This is the first main series game to depict Dry Bones with their modern appearance.

This game also introduces a variant known as the Sad Dry Bones, which weeps openly whenever it is seen. Like normal Dry Bones, they are able to throw bones at the Princess, except that these bones are much faster and more difficult to avoid.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Dry Bones Painting

A Dry Bones from New Super Mario Bros.

Dry Bones are commonly encountered in both the Tower and Castle levels. Much like previous platformers, when Dry Bones are jumped on, they briefly crumble; in New Super Mario Bros., their head detaches and bounces away. Once they collapse, the Dry Bones soon revitalize themselves by reattaching their heads. If the head falls into a pit or lava, it takes longer for it to reanimate itself. If their bodies are destroyed while crumbled, the head will remain for some time before eventually despawning - if they were in the process of rebuilding themselves, the head will freeze in place momentarily. Finally, as in the previous platformers, they are immune to fireballs however they are not invincible as they can still be defeated with the effects of the Blue Shell, Starman, or the Mega Mushroom. Either defeating or stomping a Dry Bones earns the player 200 points, like in Super Mario World.

A new variant, Super Dry Bones, is also introduced. Similarly to their smaller cousins, they can be found only in various castles and fortresses. It takes a Ground Pound to crumble them briefly, and they revive themselves as quickly as the normal Dry Bones do. Both types of Dry Bones can be permanently defeated by a Mega Mushroom, a Starman, or a Blue Shell. Super Dry Bones cannot be hurt at all by Mini Mario. Also, Dry Bowser, a Dry Bones version of Bowser, makes his debut in this game.

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Dry Bones in SMG

A group of Dry Bones in Super Mario Galaxy

This is the first appearance of Dry Bones in a 3D Super Mario game. They are only encountered in Dusty Dune Galaxy, Bowser's Dark Matter Plant, and Bowser's Galaxy Reactor, in the gravitational spotlights part. In this game, Dry Bones are commonly seen roaming around their general location but upon sight of Mario (or Luigi), they start chasing them aggressively. They can be a hassle as they commonly appear in large numbers in small areas. Stomping on a Dry Bones causes it to crumble apart but it will reassemble shortly after Destroying them, completely however, needs from Mario to be in his Rainbow Star form, leaving three Star Bits when destroyed. They can also walk into quicksand if executed properly otherwise it is fatal. When a Dry Bones successfully attacks Mario or Luigi, it cackles similarly to a Boo. Dry Bones can fall off ledges if tricked accurately.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Dry Bones Castle Lava

Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad jumping by a Dry Bones in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Dry Bones are enemies commonly found in tower and castle levels, like in New Super Mario Bros., and retain their behavior from said game. However, there are new means of defeating a Dry Bones; players need to use a Starman, a POW Block, a Koopa Shell, or the Ice Flower/Penguin Suit to defeat a Dry Bones. In the original New Super Mario Bros., once they reattach their heads and fully regenerate, the player can jump on it to make it collapse again. However, in this game, the player can make the Dry Bones collapse again while it tries to stand up. Super Dry Bones also makes a reappearance.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Dry Bones Castle Chase

A Dry Bones chases Mario in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Dry Bones return as enemies, acting the same as in Super Mario Galaxy. They once again chase Mario (or Luigi) upon sight, although they now rarely fall off edges and are not tricked as easily. Just as before, a Dry Bones can only be defeated from the effects of a Rainbow Star. Dry Bones are encountered in desert-themed galaxies such as the Slipsand Galaxy and in Bowser/Bowser Jr. galaxies such as Bowser Jr.'s Fiery Flotilla, Bowser's Lava Lair, Bowser's Gravity Gauntlet, and Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker. Stomping or Spinning into a Dry Bones causes it to crumble apart briefly.

Super Mario 3D Land[]

Dry Bones Bowser Dispenser

Dry Bones spawning from the Baddie Box.

Dry Bones are commonly found in Castles retaining their behavior from the Super Mario Galaxy games. Dry Bones are first seen in World 1-Castle and from there go on to make appearances in various other Castles throughout the game. Dry Bones once again break and then reassemble upon being stomped or tail-whipped and retain their trademark immunity to the Fire Flower however a Dry Bones can be defeated with the effects of a Starman, Statue Leaf, or Invincibility Leaf. Dry Bones can also spawn from Baddie Boxes.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Dry Bones Super Dry Bones

A Dry Bones and a Super Dry Bones as seen in New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Dry Bones and Super Dry Bones appear in New Super Mario Bros. 2. Like its predecessors, they are commonly found in towers and castle levels. However, they are also found in non-boss levels, such as World 6-A. They retain their appearance from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and can be defeated with a Starman, Invincibility Leaf, or Gold Flower. Like in Super Mario 3D Land, tail whips make them briefly crumble. In this game, when there is a "bah" in the music, Dry Bones dance in a way similar to a Koopa Troopa.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Dry Bones Fortress

A Dry Bones wandering in the first Fortress of the game.

Dry Bones appear again in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe behaving in the same way as in previous games. However, unlike in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they are unaffected by lava in this game. Also, once the Dry Bones reconstructs, the eyes flash a red glare, similar to their appearance in Super Mario 3D Land. Super Dry Bones also reappear in this game, as well as the long-missed Bony Beetle of Super Mario World. Instead of doing a dance similar to a Koopa like in New Super Mario Bros. 2, Dry Bones will spin their heads during the vocal riff in the music. A Dry Bones can be defeated with the effects of either the Ice Flower, Penguin Suit, or the Starman.

Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Although Dry Bones are absent in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, a winged sub-type called the Parabones appears. They can fly and behave similarly to the Dry Bones in previous 3D Mario games.

Super Mario Maker sub-series[]

Dry Bones 8-Bit Classic

Some Dry Bones in the Super Mario Bros. style of Super Mario Maker.

Dry Bones appear as enemies in Super Mario Maker, its Nintendo 3DS port Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and its sequel Super Mario Maker 2. They are among the placeable enemies in Course Maker. Dry Bones act the same as in earlier 2D games (although in the New Super Mario Bros. U style, they fully crumble apart rather than just losing the head when stomped on) and can be placed in all themes and styles. A Dry Bones can be given a Super Mushroom to become a Super Dry Bones or wings to become a Parabones. In these games, Dry Bones retain their invulnerability to Fire Mario's fireballs, and can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman.

Super Mario Run[]

Dry Bones Solo Run

Luigi jumps over a Dry Bones and goes for a Ring of Fire.

Dry Bones return in Super Mario Run, retaining their behavior from earlier Super Mario appearances. They are less common, and mainly appear within Castle levels. Stomping a Dry Bones can yield bonus Coins. Just as before, Dry Bones can only be defeated with the effects of a Starman.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

The Parabones from Super Mario 3D World return in Super Mario Odyssey behaving the same way as it did before however it can also be captured this time.

In Hotel Mario[]

Here, they are named Skeleton Koopas, and appear as one of the enemies. Skeleton Koopas are only encountered in Ludwig's Thump Castle Hotel. Just as before, Skeleton Koopas have the ability to revive after being knocked out. A Dry Bones can be defeated from a fireball thrown by Fire Mario, unlike the Super Mario series.

In Paper Mario series[]

In the Paper Mario series, Dry Bones appears as an enemy, are usually found in the later, if not last, dungeons.

Paper Mario[]

Paper Dry Bones Old

A Dry Bones from Paper Mario

Dry Bones appears within Bowser's Castle. Several can be found throughout the second half of the castle, and, in this game, the Dry Bones can't be defeated regularly. Dry Bones can be "defeated" by regular attacks, but after a few turns, so long as other enemies still stand, the Dry Bones will rise up and begin fighting again. However, if a Dry Bones is defeated with a fire-based attack, he'll be hit with a critical hit maximizing in 16 points of damage, more than enough to defeat him. The body burns when hit by a fire attack, so it doesn't get the ability to rise back up. If a Dry Bones isn't defeated in this manner, no Star Points will be given to Mario.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Paper Dry Bones Classic

A Dry Bones as seen in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Dry Bones appear in the final dungeon, the Palace of Shadow. Here, Mario first encounters a few in a large circular room, and then later throughout the palace. Dry Bones, in this game, are very similar to their Paper Mario counterparts, but they have a more dangerous ability to build a new ally when the time comes. They can do this attack anytime for their turn, so long as there's no more than five people on the enemies' side. Dry Bones also appear in the Pit of 100 Trials, during floors 50 to 60. Like most enemies, Dry Bones will sometimes appear in the audience, and sometimes will throw a bone at Mario or his partner. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, also, there are subspecies of Dry Bones that appear, Red Bones, Dull Bones, and Dark Bones. The Dry Bones are the second strongest species in the game with the strongest being the Dark Bones.

Super Paper Mario[]

Dry Bones Card

Dry Bones will attack similar to how they do in the first two Paper Mario games, they'll throw bones and bump into Mario. They're less of a threat than they are in the previous game, but there are also less ways of defeating them. Still, they go down onto the ground upon losing their HP, but they aren't defeated until unless felled with a fire-based attack. Dry Bones, and Dull Bones both appear in the Underwhere, during chapter 7 and Dry Bones will also appear in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials. In the Flopside counterpart, like with all enemies, there is a dark counterpart of the enemy.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Dry Bones PMSS

Rumble Volcano Dry Bones

Dry Bones only appear in World 2. They attack mainly by hurling bones at Mario. Unlike all of the other Paper Mario games, even when the Dry Bones are defeated in battle, their bones will remain on the ground and after a few seconds, they will get back up on their feet to battle Mario again. However, in certain rooms of Sandshifter Ruins, Dry Bones will remain on the ground as long a nearby torch remains unlit and can also be defeated completely by dropping a tomb lid on them. They sometimes drop Bone stickers when defeated.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[]

Paper Dry Bones Newer

Dry Bones retain their appearance and behavior from the previous game. They can be eliminated permanently if certain walls are knocked down onto them. When defeated in battle, their bones fall and turn into a pile, and the Dry Bones revive some seconds later. They appear in Marmalade Valley and Redpepper Crater, as well as the parallel worlds of Vortex Island, Lighthouse Island and Fortune Island. A Dry Bones is the third-round opponent in Roshambo Temple #2, although after Iggy Koopa is defeated, it will be replaced with the Rock Paper Wizard until beaten.

Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

Paper Dry Bones Origami

An Origami Dry Bones

Origami Dry Bones appear as enemies in Paper Mario: The Origami King. They appear in Scorching Sandpaper Desert and the Temple of Shrooms. They will crumble into a pile of bones immediately after using any attack, and will get back up after a while if the other enemies involved in the battle are not defeated. After the sun is restored to the sky, all Dry Bones in the desert are replaced with Bone Goombas.

Regular Dry Bones also appear as NPCs in the Earth Vellumental Temple, Shogun Studios, Overlook Mountain, and the Bonehead Island café where one is found arguing with a Bone Goomba. In Overlook Mountain, a Dry Bones in a collapsed state with a Shell Stone is found behind a wall which must be peeled off with the 1,000-Fold Arms. Olivia assumes that it was a deceased Koopa Troopa, until the Dry Bones reassembles. In Shogun Studios, Mario must trade the baseball for a bone.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]

Dry Bones GBA

Dry Bones are enemies encountered at Hoohoo Mountain, and accompany Beanies during battle. As they attack, the head spinning hints that it will attack Mario. The rotating head hints that it will attack Luigi. Dry Bones have a stronger variant named Elite Dry Bones.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]

Dry Bones Small

Dry Bones return as an enemy, and reside within Yoob's Belly. When a battle is initiated, a Dry Bones throws bones at Mario and Luigi. Usually, the Dry Bones stays still while throwing the bone, which causes the bone to go towards a single brother. A Mario brother must jump to dodge this attack. If the Dry Bones jumps before throwing a bone, however, the bone bounces over the brothers' head and causes damage if one of the Bros. jumps into the bone. Furthermore, Dry Bones is able to attack the Bros. one after the other. If the Dry Bones clacks, it attacks Mario before attacking Luigi, and if the Dry Bones twirls its head, it attacks Luigi before attacking Mario.

Later in the game, large Dry Bones statues appear in Gritzy Desert. When these are encountered, the player has to split the babies and the adults. After doing this, they have to hit four blocks within ten seconds of each other. There are two pairs of blocks in the desert, and once the two pairs are hit, a hidden door to the Koopaseum opens.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]

While Dry Bones do not appear as an enemy, some can be found in the Fawful Theater. One is in the lobby of the building, and the rest attend Fawful's show. There are also two Dry Bones standing in the watchtowers of Bowser's mechanized castle during Bowser's fight against it.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

Dry Bones return as enemies, but they are only fought during the second battle with Kamek in Dreamy Neo Bowser Castle. They also appear in groups and they mainly attack by charging and throwing bones at Mario. After they have been defeated, Mario can use their remains to damage Kamek as the latter flies around on his broom.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

Regular Dry Bones appear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam during the Dry Bowser boss fight when he uses his inhaling attack, although their paper versions only appear as enemies. Papercraft Dry Bones also appear as enemies in the Papercraft King Boo boss fight.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]

Dry Bones Quads

The Beanbean Dry Bones.

Dry Bones Battle DX

And The Koopa Dry Bones.

Dry Bones return with the same role and appearance as in the original. The bipedal version appears as Ranged allies in the Bowser's Minions sub-game of the 3DS remake, meaning the quadruped version is of bean-bean origin. Their in-game description is "Their calcium-deficient bodies are weak. They despise losing to Koopa Troopas."

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]

Dry Bones retain their role in the Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story remake. Aside from this, Dry Bones can additionally be found as enemies and recruitable allies in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode, first appearing in the level Bone Storm. Parabones also appear in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey mode, although a little earlier than their regular counterparts.

In Mario Baseball series[]

Mario Superstar Baseball[]

Dry Bones Baseball

Dry Bones in Mario Superstar Baseball

This is Dry Bones' first playable appearance within a Mario game. Dry Bones is introduced as a technique character as a part of Bowser's team. He is a fairly balanced player with batting as his strongest point and fielding as his weakest. Dry Bones bats left, but unlike Koopa Troopa, he also throws with his left hand. Dry Bones has good chemistry with Koopa Troopa and Bowser. This game also introduces his current design, which closer resembles a Koopa Troopa.

Dry Bones also has three color variations, although each of them act as unique selectable characters. Each of Dry Bones' variants has lower speed, although this is compensated for improvement in a different skill.

  • Green Dry Bones: Stronger batting. Pitches a breaking ball for a Star Pitch, as does the standard Dry Bones.
  • Red Dry Bones: Near-equal stats to Green Dry Bones, but with slightly stronger hitting power despite a smaller contact size. His Star Pitch is a fastball. Notably, this variant is more unique visually, having dark grey "skin", red gloves, red eyes, a slight scowl, and a spike on his nose, as well as several on the back of his shell.
  • Blue Dry Bones: Has the best fielding arm of the bunch. His Star Pitch is a change-up.

Mario Super Sluggers[]

Dry Bones returns as a playable character. It is a powerful hitter despite being an average batter in Mario Superstar Baseball. Once again, Dry Bones has good chemistry with Koopa Troopa and Bowser, as well as color-matching Miis (depending on the variant). Like in Super Mario Galaxy, the Dry Bones in this game have two voice sets: one similar to Mario Superstar Baseball's, and an older Boo-like voice from Super Mario 64. Notably, the red variant is named "Dark Bones". In Challenge Mode, Dark Bones kidnaps Dixie Kong and battles with Mario and the other captains.

Dry Bones' three playable variants from the previous installment also return. Green Dry Bones is now a faster runner but has weaker pitching, Dark Bones is

  • Green Dry Bones: Faster running at the cost of weaker pitching.
  • Dark Bones: Strongest in pitching.
  • Blue Dry Bones: Better fielding at the cost of weaker pitching.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party 7[]

"He thinks it's funny to toss bones like they're boomerangs at Mario and co. His humor is a bit...dry."
Mario Party: Star Rush

Dry Bones appears as an unlockable playable character. He can be unlocked by purchasing him for 1000 Mileage Points in the Duty-Free Shop. His special Orb is the Magic Orb, and his partner is Boo.

Mario Party 8[]

Dryemblem

Mario Party DS[]

Hexoskeleton MPDS

A battle against Dry Bones in Hexoskeleton in Mario Party DS

Dry Bones is a hazard in the board DK's Stone Statue. Here, he can be found sleeping in a coffin. If a character lands on a Green Space near his coffin, Dry Bones wakes up and lifts the coffin lid slightly. He then shuts the lid with a strong enough force to send the character either back to the start or to where the Star is.

In Story mode, Dry Bones takes over the board, and turns Donkey Kong into a stone statue. When the player's character completes the board, they have to fight Dry Bones during the Boss minigame Hexoskeleton. Dry Bones tries to defeat the character by crushing them. To attack Dry Bones, the player's character has to Ground Pound switches on the battlefield to attack it with lightning.

A trophy of a defeated Dry Bones can be obtained by clearing the minigame five times.

Mario Party 9[]

Dry Bones is the mini-boss of Boo's Horror Castle, where he is brought forth by Bowser to work with King Boo in destroying Mario and his friends. Dry Bones is fought in the boss minigame Deck Dry Bones, where he leaps between platforms, and can be damaged by selecting cards with the same pattern as the platform he is standing on. There are also Dry Bones cards, and selecting one enables Dry Bones to attack whoever does so.

Dry Bones also appear in a few regular minigames. In the 1-vs-Rivals minigame Ruins Rumble, the solo player has to defeat not only their opponents but also some Dry Bones, even though they are not playable. In the Free-for-All minigame Smash Compactor, Dry Bones raises the compactor after each round. Throughout the minigame, when the compactor is raised, a Dry Bones may appear on top of it.

Mario Party: Island Tour[]

Dry Bones are non-playable characters. They appear in the minigame Tap Dash, and as a judge in minigame The Choicest Voice. A Big Dry Bones appears on the board Star-Crossed Skyway, where he hands out seven Mini Ztars on the third and fourth Star Stages.

Mario Party 10[]

A Dry Bones is a non-playable character who can be seen on the Bowser amiibo Party board, where it is purely for decoration.

Mario Party: Star Rush[]

He returns as a boss, albeit called Mega Dry Bones, and he attacks by throwing bones. During his second phase, the bones will be on fire and deal more damage to their target. Once he is defeated, he collapses.

Super Mario Party[]

Dry Bones is an unlockable playable character. Unlike the other unlockable characters, Dry Bones is unlocked at random from playing different modes. Dry Bones's Dice Block has three 1's and three 6's on it.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart DS[]

Dry Bones in the Dry Bomber

Dry Bones makes his first playable appearance within the series, let alone overall. Dry Bones is a character who can be unlocked by clearing all of the Nitro Cups (Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special) in Grand Prix in 50cc. Dry Bones starts out with two karts: the Standard DB and the Banisher, the latter of which bares a resemblance to a Dry Bones' old quadruped design. Dry Bones has a third personal kart named Dry Bomber, which is unlockable. His victory animation has him clapping his hands. When he loses, he beats his face and slumps over, disgruntled. Dry Bones' weight class is light, like with Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Shy Guy, though is lighter than all of them.

Dry Bones is used as a character in the Staff Ghost data for both Donut Plains 1 and Banshee Boardwalk, with a time of 1:08:027 and 2:14:403 respectively. Dry Bones' kart in both courses is the Dry Bomber.

Mario Kart Wii[]

Dry Bones Kart Wii

Dry Bones returns as an unlockable playable character. He now has to be unlocked by either winning the 100cc Leaf Cup or from playing 1,050 races. Dry Bones is a lightweight character, which means he has a low top speed, but good acceleration and off road ability. Each of his karts are recolored in gray and black. Dry Bones gets a small acceleration and drift bonus. Dry Bones's best bonus is his mini-turbo, rivaling that of Koopa Troopa's, Wario's, and Dry Bowser's and enabling vehicles like the Mini Beast and Bullet Bike to perform slightly stronger mini-turbos after a drift.

Mario Kart 8[]

MK8 Bone-Dry Ruins Metal Mario and Dry Bones

Metal Mario driving past a Dry Bones in Mario Kart 8

Though Dry Bones does not appear as a playable character in Mario Kart 8, the species appears in a few courses, most notably Bone-Dry Dunes, in which they are hazards that collapse upon driving into them. In the same course, an image of a Dry Bones can be seen on a fabric hanging from the walls of the cave. Aside from Bone-Dry Dunes, Dry Bones are among the spectators of Bowser's Castle and 3DS Neo Bowser City.

There is a stamp of a Dry Bones can be unlocked by winning against the Staff Ghost of Bone-Dry Dunes.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Unlike the original version, Dry Bones now appears as a playable character. He is in the same lightweight subset as Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and small Miis. His kart symbol is a sideways shot of its skull. Dry Bones is also the 200cc Staff Ghost for Bone-Dry Dunes.

In Mario Hoops 3-on-3[]

While Dry Bones do not physically appear, the backboard for each team's basketball hoop in the Pirate Ship court bears the design of a Dry Bones's head.

In Mario Strikers Charged[]

Dry Bones are featured as sidekick players. Classified as a defensive player, Dry Bones has good speed, giving it quick reactions and allowing it to quickly run toward the ball, while its defense is Tackling opponents fiercely to knock them off in a short time. Like the defensive captains, Dry Bones also shows a bad passing skill and power as to kick the metallic ball immediately on its maximum power. Dry Bones' Skillshot is the Shocker.

In Mario Sports Mix[]

Dry Bones appear in Ghoulish Galleon, where they are sometimes hidden in boxes, and stun players if they come in contact with it. They can also be used as a shield by players.

Crossover appearances[]

Mario & Sonic series[]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)[]

Dry Bones make a minor appearance as being among the referees featured in certain Olympic events.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[]

Three Dry Bones appear alongside Dry Bowser as the final rivals in Festival Mode in the event Ice Hockey on the last day. Dry Bowser is the goalie, and three Dry Bones are the field players. In Team Festival Mode, a fourth Dry Bones takes the place of Dry Bones.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[]

Dry Bones is a rival encountered on Icepeak in Adventure Tours. The characters must beat him in a match of Curling to win and progress further into the area.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Dry Bones only make cameo appearances.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

It is featured in the form of both a trophy and a sticker. Ironically, the sticker can only be equipped by Lucario, a Pokémon, and doing so increases his Aura power by 17.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]

Dry Bones is once again featured in the form of a trophy.

"That's a Dry Bones. At one time, it was a Koopa, but now... Max HP is 10. Attack is 2. It will keep getting up no matter how many times you stomp it... Because it's already dead, you may have to use fire to stop it for good..."

Description
Max HP: 10, Attack: 2. This resilient revenant won't rest in peace. Maybe it's its undying loyalty to Bowser. Or was it the pie it never got a chance to eat?

Dry Bones
A skeletal member of the Koopa Troopa family. Immune to fireballs, Dry Bones will fall apart when stomped upon, then reassemble moments later. They're typically found in dungeon levels in Mario games but have also been known to participate in various sports and activities such as baseball, kart racing, and soccer. They're likely boning up on the competition.

Dry Bones
NA They must have a bone to pick with Mario. No matter how many times he stomps them, these guys put themselves back together again. Can't they just rest in pieces? By the way, have you noticed how nimble they are in Mario Kart? Skeletons must be really aerodynamic or something...
EU How these guys are alive when they're just bones is anyone's guess. Jump on one to make it fall apart, but don't expect it to rest in pieces! It'll be back on its feet in no time. These oddly cute little guys also turn up in the Mario Kart series as lightweight racers. Probably because they don't have any skin or muscles weighing them down.
