Cheep Cheep (プクプク Pukupuku?), alternatively spelled Cheep-Cheep, is a common fish species of the Mushroom Kingdom, first introduced in Super Mario Bros., where it appears as a common underwater enemy. It is a recurring enemy in the Super Mario series, let alone a recurring species throughout the Mario and Yoshi franchises.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

A Cheep Cheep has a round body, a yellow mohawk-shaped dorsal fin, white pectoral fins, and a yellow tail fin.

Behavior[]

Cheep Cheeps slowly swim forward under the water. Since Super Mario Bros. 3, Cheep Cheeps can also leap out of the water and soar through the air.

Cheep Cheeps have been shown to survive out of water, although its means of locomotion on it varies between its appearances, with the Cheep Cheep either flopping around uselessly or hopping from place to place. Throughout its appearances, the attack pattern of Cheep Cheep remains consistent, slowly swimming towards Mario or another playable character.

Like many other recurring enemies, there are a few friendly characters within their species, such as Sushie, an ally of Mario in Paper Mario. Sushie can perform actions that regular Cheep Cheeps cannot, such as belly flop and manipulate water.

NA Those powerful pectoral fins can turn them into a dangerous airborne threat. Besides Mario games, you can find them in the oceans of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. This critter was also the inspiration for the Cheep Charger in Mario Kart Wii.
EU These puffy fish use their strong fins to launch themselves high into the air. And they've not only made appearances in the Mario series—they're also bobbing around in the water in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening! They were also the inspiration for the Cheep Charger in Mario Kart Wii.
